IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mathew,

How are you and your family? Hope you all are doing well. We are glad to have you as our neighbour, but would like to bring an issue in light which I am facing due to the loud music played late at night everyday.

Though, I too am a music lover and enjoy listening to it whenever I get time, but music played by your children late night is causing trouble to my family and specially to me.

I would like to bring to your notice that from next month I am having final exames and I get time for preparation only at night due to my hectic schedule. Due to heavy noise, I fail to concentrate on my studies. Moreover, I couldnot have sound sleep due to loud music, which keeps me restless next day.

It is a humble request if you could stop playing music so loud at night, so that I can study for my exames and can have sound sleep too.

I would really appreciate if you could accept my request.

Yours neighbour,

Aaksh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You successfully covered all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. You clearly explained the problem regarding the loud music played late at night by your neighbours' children, described how it is causing difficulties with your upcoming final examinations and lack of sleep, and specified the exact action you would like them to take by stopping the loud music at night. The tone is appropriately polite yet firm for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. Your ideas are relevant and directly address the requirements of a General Training Task 1 response, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter follows a clear logical organization with an appropriate greeting, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a proper sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, the problem, the consequences, the requested action, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed adequately, such as 'though', 'moreover', and 'if you could', ensuring smooth transitions between your ideas. While paragraphing and referencing are clear, occasional minor awkwardness in referencing keeps this criterion at the band 7 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some attempts at less common items such as 'hectic schedule', 'sound sleep', and 'restless next day'. There are a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, for instance, 'bring an issue in light' instead of 'bring an issue to light', and spelling errors such as 'exames' and 'couldnot'. Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly without impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if you could stop playing music...') and subordinate clauses. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including punctuation and article issues (e.g., 'Hope you all are doing well', 'from next month I am having final exames', 'Yours neighbour', and 'Aaksh'). While these errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents you from achieving a higher band score.
