IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Neighbour,
I hope you are doing well. The reason I am writing this letter to you is that I would like to discuss an arrangement about the music volume late at night.
Firstly I would like to inform you that I am a student in University of British Columbia, it is my last year of college.
However, you moved in this apartment recently,I am your neighbor living right next to your apartment in Unit 106.
I would like to request if you could please reduce the volume of your music especially at the night time. This month I have my finals and it is hard to concentrate on studies while music playing so loud.
Although I understand you played music inside of your apartment and I have no right to object about it, but it is my humble request to you if you could play music at lower volume just for next couple of weeks.
I will appreciate it a lot if we can come up with mutual arrangements.
Best Regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task well. You successfully explained the problem (loud music late at night), explained why it is causing difficulties (finals month and difficulty concentrating on your studies), and stated what action you would like them to take (reduce the volume for the next couple of weeks). The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining politeness while clearly conveying your message. All bullet points from the prompt are fully addressed, and the ideas are extended logically without any irrelevant tangents.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a clear logical organisation with an appropriate greeting, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a proper sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'However', and 'Although' are used to connect ideas, though paragraphing is somewhat fragmented into single-sentence blocks, which makes the layout slightly disjointed. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall progression of information flows well from introducing the problem to proposing a mutual arrangement.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases like 'mutual arrangements' and 'humble request'. However, there are some word choice and collocation issues, such as 'discuss an arrangement about' instead of 'discuss an issue regarding', and 'while music playing' instead of 'while music is playing'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication, effectively fulfilling the needs of the semi-formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses using 'although' and 'if'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips, including comma splices ('you moved in this apartment recently,I am your neighbor') and missing articles ('in University of British Columbia' instead of 'at the University'). Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are understandable, and they rarely impede the overall communication of your message.
