IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing this letter to complain about an issue that I am experiencing in my apartment from past few days. I am living on the second floor and some new people just moved into the apartment beside me.

Everyday, especially at the evening, when I enter into my apartment after work, experience a loud noise comes from their house. Because my final exams are coming soon, I have to prepare and focus on my studies and it makes me so hard to concentrate.

Furthermore, I am unable to sleep and relax at same time. My whole schedule has been disrupted. If is it not stopped I might failed the exams.

I would like you to take further actions about the noise, and I would also like you to talk to them about the noise so that I can focus on my study and sleep schedule.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. The letter begins by explaining the problem clearly, noting that new neighbours have moved in and are playing music late at night. The response then explains why this is causing difficulties, specifically highlighting that upcoming final exams make concentration and sleep difficult. Finally, the letter outlines the action the writer would like taken, requesting further action and intervention. However, there is a misunderstanding of recipient persona: the student writes 'Dear Sir or Madam' and 'Yours faithfully' while complaining to a landlord or housing authority, but then asks the recipient to talk directly to the neighbours. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint, but addressing the landlord as if they are a building manager who needs to intervene requires slightly clearer context. Overall, all task requirements are covered adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical paragraph structure typical of formal correspondence, including standard salutations and sign-offs. Ideas are generally sequenced well, moving from the introduction of the problem to personal impacts, and finally to the desired action. However, cohesion is at times slightly mechanical or abrupt, as seen in transitions like 'Furthermore, I am unable...' and 'If is it not stopped...'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, though some paragraphs are quite brief. Referencing is mostly clear, though the ambiguity regarding who the letter is addressed to creates a minor disruption in logical flow. Overall, the text demonstrates a coherent and clear arrangement of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts and complaints. Phrases like 'final exams are coming soon', 'disrupted schedule', and 'focus on my studies' convey the message effectively. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'from past few days' (instead of 'for the past few days'), 'at the evening' (instead of 'in the evening'), and 'experience a loud noise comes from' (which contains grammatical conflation). Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success. Spelling is generally accurate, but the lexical inaccuracies occasionally detract from precision and naturalness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If is it not stopped I might failed the exams') and subordinate clauses ('when I enter into my apartment after work, experience a loud noise comes from their house'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing prepositions ('from past few days'), tense and verb agreement errors ('I might failed the exams'), and awkward phrasing ('experience a loud noise comes from'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the grammatical mistakes cause occasional minor difficulties for the reader, placing the response firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range.
