IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Hello Neighbour,
I hope you are doing well. The reason I am writing this letter to you is that from last couple of weeks I am having noise disturbance late at night.
I understand you moved recently into this apartment. You might be enjoying your new place and listen the music after a long day. I live next to you on the same floor my unit number is 406. Unfortunately I have my final exam in two weeks and because of loud music i am not able to focus on my studies.
Although I understand it is our right to live freely in our homes but if we could adjust for couple of weeks, it would be beneficial for me.
I hope you will understand that because of loud music especially after late night I am not able to sleep. It affects my performance whole day and because of lack of sleep I am also not able to concentrate on my study.
I hope you will consider my request and together we will find a mutual ground.
Thank you.
Best Regards.
Nishat

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. You clearly explained the problem (noise disturbance late at night), described why it is causing difficulties (you have your final exam in two weeks and lack of sleep prevents you from focusing), and stated what action you would like them to take (to adjust the noise level for a couple of weeks so you can study). The tone is appropriately polite for a letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring that the task is fully addressed. There are no major omissions, and the purpose of the communication is transparent and maintained throughout the letter. Therefore, this performance aligns well with the Band 7 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Your letter has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from greeting to stating the problem, elaborating on the consequences, proposing a solution, and closing. You use basic paragraphing to separate your thoughts, although some paragraphs are quite short and could be better grouped. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'and', and 'because of' are used to connect ideas, though referencing is sometimes slightly repetitive (e.g., frequent use of 'because of'). Overall organisation is clear, but the handling of cohesive devices and paragraph structure points towards a solid Band 6.0 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with terms such as 'noise disturbance', 'apartment', 'unit number', and 'performance'. However, there are some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'listen the music' instead of 'listen to music', and 'from last couple of weeks' instead of 'for the past couple of weeks'. You also repeat certain phrases like 'not able to concentrate' and 'because of'. The vocabulary used is sufficient for a semi-formal request, but the errors place this response firmly in the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'although' and 'because'. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. For instance, 'from last couple of weeks I am having' should be 'for the past couple of weeks I have been having', and 'listen the music' contains a missing preposition. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but commas are occasionally missing after introductory phrases (e.g., 'Unfortunately I have'). These errors occasionally interrupt the flow, but they do not impede communication, matching the descriptors for Band 6.0.
