IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Karan,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. The reason I am writting this letter to you is regarding the late night music which is causing me troble.
I know it is important to socialize and party occasionaly, but I have been hearing loud music from your house almost every night past 2 weeks. On weekends it is acceptable till midnight but it is always till 1-2AM on weekdays as well.
The major difficulties that I am facing are regarding proper sleep and studying at night. My final semester exams are approaching and loud music is causing hindrance while I try to concentrate on my studies. Adding on, sleeping at night also becomes hard with the loud music which impacts my day to day activities.
I kindly request you to please lower the volume of the music and minimize parties to weekends only. This will not only help me but keep the entire neighbourhood quite and happy.
Kind Regards,
Harmanjot Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained the problem regarding the late-night music, described why it is causing difficulties for your sleep and upcoming examinations, and specified the exact action you would like Karan to take by lowering the volume and limiting parties to weekends. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. Ideas are well-extended and directly relevant to the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7.5 to 8.0 level. However, to push into higher bands, the development of the consequences could be slightly more elaborate, but overall all task requirements are thoroughly addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, logical organisation with an appropriate greeting, body paragraphs dedicated to distinct points (the problem, the impact, and the solution), and a proper sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively, ensuring each aspect of the prompt has its own space. Cohesive devices such as 'The major difficulties that I am facing', 'Adding on', and 'This will not only help me' are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions like 'Adding on' are slightly informal. Overall, the logical progression is clear throughout, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including phrases like 'good health', 'socialize and party', 'final semester exams', and 'approach and cause hindrance'. There are a few spelling and word choice inaccuracies, such as 'writting' instead of 'writing', 'troble' instead of 'trouble', 'occasionaly' instead of 'occasionally', 'past 2 weeks' instead of 'past 2 weeks', and 'quite' instead of 'quiet'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to a Band 6.0, as more precision and control over less common vocabulary are needed for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I know it is important to socialize and party occasionaly, but I have been hearing loud music...' and 'This will not only help me but keep the entire neighbourhood quite and happy.' There are several grammatical and mechanical errors, including spelling mistakes ('writting', 'troble', 'quite'), missing articles, and slight prepositions issues (e.g., 'past 2 weeks' instead of 'for the past 2 weeks'). Despite these flaws, the majority of your sentences are clear and your meaning is never obscured, which places your grammar performance solidly at Band 6.5.
