IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr sharma

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to lower the music volume during nights because I have examination soon.

First of all, I work in the morning and come back home in the evening, so the evening and night are the only time I have to prepare for my examination. The noise coming from your apartment is very distracting and loud and its very hard to concentrate on study.

It also create many difficulties for me. Firstly, it resulting in poor sleeping. Moreover, sometimes I need to attend online class in the evening so its very hard to listen to the teacher due to loud noise.

I would really appreciate it if you could use the sound proof panels and attached them to your side walls, which would be beneficial to control the music noise. At last, please try to complete your partie and gatherings before 10 pm.

I hope you will understad my situation.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Vishal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student clearly explains the problem by stating that the neighbour plays loud music late at night. The second bullet point is addressed by explaining how it causes difficulties, noting that the writer works in the morning, needs to prepare for exams, cannot sleep well, and struggles to hear online classes. Finally, the third bullet point is covered by suggesting specific actions, such as using soundproof panels and ending parties before 10 PM. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. All parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant and coherent ideas, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It follows standard letter-writing conventions, starting with an appropriate salutation ("Dear Mr sharma") and closing with a proper sign-off ("Yours sincerely, Vishal"). Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction, the explanation of the problem, the difficulties faced, the requested actions, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as "First of all", "It also create", "Firstly", "Moreover", and "At last" are employed to guide the reader through the points, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is appropriate throughout, which justifies a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating ideas related to studying, work schedules, and noise disturbances (e.g., "distracting", "concentrate", "online class", "sound proof panels"). There are a few lexical and spelling errors, such as "parties" spelled as "partie" and the missing capital letter in "sharma". The writer also attempts some less common phrasing like "beneficial to control", but occasional word-choice and collocation inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band. However, these errors do not impede communication, making this a clear Band 6.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as "I am writing this letter to request you to..." and "I would really appreciate it if you could use the sound proof panels...". There are several grammatical errors present, including subject-verb agreement issues ("It also create" instead of "It also creates", "examination soon" instead of "an examination soon"), missing articles ("poor sleeping" instead of "poor sleep"), and minor punctuation lapses. Despite these errors, the meaning remains entirely clear and communication is not impeded. The structural variety combined with manageable inaccuracies fits the Band 6.0 descriptor well.
