- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Meet,
Hii, hope you are great, I am fine. As I know that new neighbours are arriving, I was very happy. But after somedays, I realised I need to discuss this topic to you about playing music in high volume till late night.
As you play music till late night and keeping volume sky rocketed, made nearly impossible for me to get concentrated in my studies as well as it gives severe disturbance during my sleeping hours.
As a college student, I hardly got any time to study for my examination as I am doing part time job simertainiously. So night time would be best time for me to study. During that time, your loud music ruins my concentration. My exam is coming up next week.
I am just requesting you to keep your music volume low. If not done by tomorrow mornig, official complain will be done in the nearest police station. Consider this as the first and the last warning from my side, please keep our neighbourhood noise pollution free.
your lovely neighbour,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. You clearly explained the problem regarding the loud music, outlined why it causes difficulties due to your upcoming exams and part-time work schedule, and stated the action you expect your neighbour to take. However, the tone in the final paragraph shifts rather abruptly from a friendly neighbourhood request to an aggressive ultimatum ('official complain will be done', 'Consider this as the first and the last warning'), which feels slightly unnatural for a polite letter, even when setting a boundary. Despite this tonal shift, the purpose of the letter is fully realized, and all requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from a greeting and identification of the issue to the personal impact and finally the required action. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'As I know that new neighbours are arriving' or 'As you play music till late night and keeping volume sky rocketed, made nearly impossible'. Referencing and linking between sentences could be smoother to enhance readability and ensure the flow feels more natural for an informal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'severe disturbance', 'ruins my concentration', and 'noise pollution free'. However, there are notable lexical errors and unnatural collocations throughout the text, such as 'playing music in high volume' (instead of *at a high volume*), 'keeping volume sky rocketed' (instead of *keeping the volume skyrocketed*), and 'official complain will be done' (instead of *an official complaint will be filed*). These errors show limited control over word choice and collocation, though communication remains clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'As a college student, I hardly got any time to study...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include 'Hii, hope you are great, I am fine' (run-on comma splice), 'after somedays' (spelling and article omission), 'simertainiously' (spelling error for *simultaneously*), 'would be best time' (missing article), and 'official complain will be done' (passive voice misuse). These errors cause some distraction and occasionally impede smooth reading, placing your grammar score at Band 5.5.
