IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to Luxmi Nagar Apartments, I hope you really like this area. I got to know that recently you have been shifted here. I'm Tannu your friendly neighbour, pursuing master's in computer sciene. From next month onwards my exam will be commenced so for that I need to prepare for my exam as hard as I can.

I know you and your family is very fond of lete night music but due to your music my studies are getting hampered and my sleeping schedule also. I generally sleep around 9 so that I get early in morning for my studies and then go to the college. I do require a fruitful sleep so that I can be productive in my whole day. Because of your late night music I won't be able to m,anage my life properly and this is bit problematic for me.

Being a neighbour I would like to request you to take certain actions like won't listen music on speaker instead of that you can use headphones so that other people won't get disturbed.

Thank you

Tamanna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task. First, the problem is clearly explained: the neighbours play music late at night. Second, the difficulties are detailed, specifically that it hampers studies and disrupts the sleeping schedule, affecting daily productivity. Finally, a clear request for action is made, suggesting they use headphones instead of playing music on speakers. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to neighbours, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant to the prompt, fully meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear logical organization with an appropriate opening and closing. Ideas progress reasonably well from welcoming the neighbours to stating the problem, explaining the impact, and finally offering a solution. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different aspects of the message. However, the cohesion relies somewhat on basic transitional elements like 'First' or 'then' could be more smoothly integrated, and referencing is occasionally a bit repetitive. Overall arrangement is coherent overall, making it a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating the intended message. There are attempts at less common phrasing such as 'fruitful sleep', 'productivity', and 'hampered'. However, there are also some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'sciene' instead of 'science', 'commenced' used incorrectly for future exams starting, and 'lete' instead of 'late'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I generally sleep around 9 so that I get early in morning for my studies...' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including 'you have been shifted here' (instead of 'you have moved here'), 'my exam will be commenced', and 'won't listen music on speaker'. Punctuation is also slightly flawed in places, such as missing commas and run-on structures. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear, which aligns well with a Band 6.0 descriptor.
