IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Mohan,

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with some of your unregulatory behaviours. I am a resident of the Villa Santa apartment and I just live opposite to you.

I am unable to focus on my academics due to your late night parties, and the unneccessary sounds at midnight disturbs my sleep patterns. I have to wake up early for my studies, unfortunately since you have moved into the flat I am hardly able to cope with my learnings.

I am a working employee. I have to go work in early morning, despite studying whole night. As I have mentioned, the late night party, social gatherings and a lot more behaviours is affecting me a lot and bothers my routine.

I would like to request you to please co-operate with the legal regulations of our apartment. I am not asking to stop what you are doing but just formally advising you to think about others too.

I hope you understand my concern.

Yours faithfully,

Anjali Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You successfully covered all three bullet points required for this General Training Task 1 letter. You clearly explained the problem regarding your neighbours playing music late at night, described the difficulties it causes for your upcoming examinations and sleep schedule, and stated the action you would like them to take. However, there are some contradictions and unclear elements in your content. For instance, in the second paragraph you mention that you have examinations soon, but in the third paragraph you state 'I am a working employee. I have to go work in early morning', which slightly shifts the focus away from your stated student status. Despite this minor confusion in your personal context, your purpose is fully communicated and the tone is appropriately semi-formal for a letter to a neighbour. Therefore, you have adequately addressed the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure for a formal complaint, beginning with an appropriate salutation and ending with a correct sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate your opening, the explanation of problems, and your requested action. However, there are some issues with cohesion and referencing. For example, using 'unregulatory behaviours' and repeating ideas about late-night parties across the second and third paragraphs makes the progression feel slightly repetitive rather than smoothly developed. Additionally, some transitional markers are missing between your statements about studying and working. Overall, the organization is clear enough to guide the reader easily through your complaint, fitting the criteria for a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'express my disappointment', 'sleep patterns', and 'legal regulations'. However, there are several lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text. For instance, the phrase 'unregulatory behaviours' is incorrect and unnatural; 'unlawful' or simply 'disruptive' would be more appropriate. You also misspelled 'unnecessary' as 'unneccessary' and used 'learnings', which is not standard usage in this context. Furthermore, repeating 'late night party' and 'behaviours' limits the flexibility of your vocabulary. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to express...' and 'I am unable to focus on my academics due to your late night parties...'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward constructions. For example, 'I just live opposite to you' contains an unnecessary 'to' after opposite. You also wrote 'despite studying whole night' instead of 'despite studying the whole night', and 'a lot more behaviours is affecting' which has a subject-verb agreement error ('behaviours' is plural, so it should be 'are affecting'). Punctuation is generally fine, and these errors rarely impede communication, allowing you to secure a solid band 6 for this criterion.
