IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sean,

I am writing this letter to express my concern regarding the jugling sound coming from your place especially at night time.

To begin with, after 12 PM, every night a noise come from your house . Maybe, someone listen music at night on high volume. This problem was from the day your family moved into the place at first I though it was because, you were satling but not, it was daily problem.

However, next month my most important exam is coming for CRA so, I need to study hard for that. But, do to continuouse distrubtion from next door. I am not able to focus and it reduce my productively and effeciancy at same that.

I would really appreciate it, if after 10 PM the volume of your speakers will reduce to minimum. In addition to that, it would be gratally helpfull, if windows also closed at same time. It will help me alot to follow my routin.

Thank you for your time and Kind consideration. Hope to see sone changes soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Kim charly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained the problem by mentioning the loud music coming from your neighbour's flat late at night. You described why it is causing difficulties, noting that you have important exams coming up next month and the continuous disturbance is reducing your productivity and focus. Finally, you outlined the specific action you would like them to take, which is to lower the volume after 10 PM and close their windows. Your tone is appropriately polite for a semi-formal letter, and all requirements of the prompt are fully covered. However, the development of some ideas is slightly basic, placing this firmly at a band 6.5 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a generally clear and logical structure with an appropriate greeting and sign-off. You have used standard paragraphing to separate your introduction, the description of the problem, its impact, and your desired solution. Cohesive devices are used to connect your thoughts, such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'In addition to that'. However, some of the transitions and referencing feel a bit mechanical or awkward, such as 'This problem was from the day your family moved into the place at first I though it was because...'. Paragraph breaks are present, but the overall flow could be smoother to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message effectively. You attempted some less common phrases like 'express my concern', 'continuous disturbance', and 'productivity and efficiency'. However, there are several noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the overall quality, such as 'jugling' instead of 'jarring' or 'loud', 'listen' instead of 'listens', 'satling' instead of 'settling', 'productively' instead of 'productivity', 'effeciancy' instead of 'efficiency', 'continuouse' instead of 'continuous', 'distrubtion' instead of 'disturbance', and 'gratally helpfull' instead of 'greatly helpful'. These errors indicate a limited control over less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You have attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('I would really appreciate it, if after 10 PM the volume of your speakers will reduce to minimum'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies and awkward modal verb usage ('will reduce' instead of 'be reduced'). Punctuation errors, such as sentence fragments and comma splices ('Maybe, someone listen music at night on high volume'), also occur. These errors occasionally cause slight strain for the reader, though communication of your core message remains intact.
