IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear peter,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my concern about the activities you do during night time.
My concern is about your sound system, as i know you may have a hobby of listening to music in loud volume. However, my examination date is in next 25 days so i have limited time for the preperation and during the day time, i have to complete my other household tasks so night time is the only period for me to focus on my studies.
I am in the habit of doing study late night and also i can not sleep well in any kind of noise but since you have been moved next to my door, it has became very difficult for me to concentrate in my studies because of your high volume sound system.
Moreover, I would like to say that if it is possible please try to decrease your music sound or either it might be more beneficial for me if you can postpone your time for listening till the next month. I would appriciate your kindness and helpful nature.
Thank you
Baldeep singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. The student clearly explains the problem by stating "your sound system" and the loud volume of music late at night. The difficulties are thoroughly detailed, noting that "my examination date is in next 25 days" and that night time is the only period available for studying because of daytime household tasks. Furthermore, the student outlines the desired action, asking the neighbour to "please try to decrease your music sound or either it might be more beneficial for me if you can postpone your time for listening till the next month." The tone is appropriately polite for a semi-formal letter, and all ideas are adequately supported and developed throughout the response. Therefore, this fulfills the Band 6.5 to 7.0 criteria well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter maintains a clear overall arrangement with a standard semi-formal greeting ("Dear peter,") and sign-off ("Thank you / Baldeep singh"). Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from the introduction of the issue to the personal impact and finally proposing a solution. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, such as separating the explanation of studies from the request for action. Cohesive devices like "However", "Moreover", and "since" are utilised, although referencing is sometimes slightly repetitive or mechanical (e.g., repeating "My concern is about"). Overall, the progression is easy to follow, aligning closely with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts relating to studies, noise, and neighbours. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary such as "preperation" (spelled incorrectly as preparation), "beneficial", and "appriciate". However, there are several lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing "during night time" instead of "at night", "in loud volume" instead of "at a loud volume", and "postpone your time for listening" rather than postponing the listening sessions. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and multi-clause sentences ("However, my examination date is in next 25 days so i have limited time..."). There are several grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation errors, including capitalization issues ("peter", "i", "baldeep singh"), spelling mistakes ("preperation", "appriciate"), and preposition errors ("in next 25 days", "since you have been moved"). Despite these frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, the meaning remains clear and the errors rarely impede communication, placing the writing comfortably at Band 6.0.
