IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Anita,

I am writing to express my anger regarding the new tenants who moved recently into Apartment number 35 next door to my unit. They play loud music from midnight till early morning, which is causing disturbance to sleep and studies.

It is frustrating because I have to wake up at 5:00 am every morning to get ready for university, and because of the noise I am unable to sleep at night and in the morning I am facing difficulty waking up. My mid-term exams are approaching next week, and I do not want to take the risk of failing.

It would be appreciated if you could send them a warning letter. I have already requested them to decrease the volume, instead of listening to me, they were bullying me. It was a very heartbreaking time for me, so I decided to complain to you.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively covers all bullet points of the prompt. You successfully explained the problem by stating that the new neighbours play loud music from midnight until early morning. You clearly outlined why it is causing difficulties, noting that you need to wake up at 5:00 am for university and have upcoming mid-term examinations. Furthermore, you stated the action you would like taken by asking Anita to send them a warning letter. The tone is appropriate for addressing a housing manager or landlord, and the ideas are fully developed and relevant. This performance satisfies all the requirements of Band 7 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter has a clear logical organization and progression throughout. It follows a standard semi-formal letter format with an appropriate salutation and sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect: introducing the problem, explaining the impact on studies and sleep, and requesting specific action. Cohesive devices such as 'because', 'and', and 'instead of' are used reasonably well, though referencing in sentences like 'instead of listening to me, they were bullying me' could be slightly smoother. Overall, the text flows logically and is easy to follow, placing it comfortably in Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and with some precision. Phrases such as 'express my anger', 'approaching next week', and 'heartbreaking time' are utilized effectively. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as saying 'moving recently' instead of 'recently moved' and 'causing disturbance to sleep' rather than 'disturbing my sleep'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is more than adequate for the task and communicates your meaning without any hindrance, meeting the criteria for Band 6.5, which is rounded to 6.0 in accordance with standard reporting, or easily reaching a solid Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses and conditional-like expressions ('It would be appreciated if you could send them a warning letter'). There are some grammatical errors, such as the word order in 'who moved recently into' (should be 'who recently moved into') and a comma splice in the sentence 'I have already requested them to decrease the volume, instead of listening to me, they were bullying me'. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar and punctuation is generally good, supporting a score of Band 6.5, which aligns well with a solid Band 6 descriptor.
