Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sarah,
I hope you are in good health and well-being. I expect that you are enjoying your time in your newly-established house in DHA Phase 8. I am writing this letter to bring to your attention about the music that you and your siblings play late at night these days, which is a constant source of disturbance for my studies.
I know that it is perfectly alright to enjoy and listen to music in leisure time, particularly when we want to relax and get rid of the same old routine. However, currently, I am preparing for my upcoming final year exams, which are extensively hard and demanding. I usually study in my own room, but the window of your room is located just next to mine, and oftentimes, the volume is very high which disrupts my concentration and focus. Moreover, my sleep schedule has also been disturbed, owing to this problem.
Now that you know, I kindly request you and your family members to avoid late night music, as it is negatively affecting my studies and sleep pattern. I hope that you understand my concern and look into it at your earliest convenience.
Looking forward to your positive response.
Yours sincerely,
Afreen Baloch

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all bullet points of the task instructions in an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for a letter to a neighbour. You clearly explain the problem by mentioning that Sarah and her siblings play music late at night. You elaborate on why it is causing difficulties by describing your upcoming final-year exams and how the shared window location disrupts your concentration and sleep schedule. Finally, you successfully state the action you would like them to take by kindly requesting them to avoid late-night music. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the ideas are well-developed throughout. Band descriptors for Band 8 are fully met as all parts of the prompt are covered effectively with clear support and no significant omissions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter exhibits a clear and logical organisation from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. Paragraphing is used very appropriately to separate different elements of the message: the introduction and statement of the problem in the first paragraph, the impact on studies and sleep in the second paragraph, and the call to action in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Now that you know' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader through your thoughts without any awkward transitions. Referencing is clear throughout, and the overall progression of the text is smooth and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient and natural range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task. Phrases like 'constant source of disturbance', 'extensively hard and demanding', and 'earliest convenience' show an ability to use less common lexical items with good control over style and collocation. There are minor slips, such as 'bring to your attention about' (which should be 'bring to your attention' or 'draw your attention to'), but these do not impede communication. The word choices are generally accurate and appropriate for the context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a healthy mix of simple and complex sentence structures used accurately. Examples of complex structures include 'I am writing this letter to bring to your attention about the music that you and your siblings play late at night these days...' and 'Now that you know, I kindly request you and your family members to avoid late night music...'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled well. While there is a minor prepositional redundancy with 'bring to your attention about', your control over grammar is strong and communication is never hindered.
