IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing this letter to formally request you to manage loud music during late night as it is affecting my academics and sleep schedule.

Since your family moved in the apartment, which is next to ours, the loud music noise is coming on everyday basis especially at the night time. As per building guidelines, tenants are not allowed to listen music loudly after 10 P.M.

This issue is causing a couple of problems in my personal life. Firstly, my end term exams are approaching and after spending whole day at university I barely have a few hours to prepare for my exams. As the noise from your house is clearly disturbing my concentration. Secondly, I am not able to sleep peacefully and it is causing low energy levels and fatigue in my body.

I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume after 10P.M. so I could study in quite environment and complete my sleep. I am looking forward to your promt actions in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Kush

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have fully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly explained the problem by stating that your new neighbours play loud music late at night, described the difficulties it causes by explaining how it ruins your sleep and hinders your final exam preparation, and specified the exact action you would like them to take. Your tone is appropriately formal and polite for a semi-formal/formal letter to a neighbour. The purpose of the letter is immediately clear, and your ideas are well-developed and supported with logical details, such as mentioning the building guidelines about noise after 10 P.M. Overall, this is a strong performance that fully satisfies the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression. You use standard letter conventions, opening and closing appropriately, and your paragraphs are well-structured around specific themes (the problem, the difficulties, and the desired action). You use cohesive devices and linking words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'As per' to connect your ideas effectively, although some transitions could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, helping the reader to follow your argument effortlessly. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately throughout the response to guide the reader from your introduction to your conclusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common and task-appropriate items, such as 'formally request', 'schedule', 'guidelines', 'concentration', and 'fatigue'. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, writing 'manage loud music' is slightly unnatural compared to 'lower the volume' or 'turn down the music', and you wrote 'complete my sleep' instead of 'catch up on sleep' or 'get enough sleep'. Additionally, there is a minor typo with 'promt' instead of 'prompt'. Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is adequate to convey your message clearly and precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over your grammatical structures with frequent error-free sentences. You successfully integrated subordinate clauses, such as in 'Since your family moved in the apartment... the loud music noise is coming on everyday basis'. However, a few grammatical errors and awkward phrasings persist. For instance, 'coming on everyday basis' should be 'happens on a daily basis', and 'quiet environment' was misspelled as 'quite environment'. Furthermore, the preposition in 'moved in the apartment' is better phrased as 'moved into the apartment'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the grammar score from reaching a higher band.
