Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The student explains the problem by stating, 'you play loud music late at night,' details why it is causing difficulties by mentioning that it is 'affecting my studies and sleep' and impacting exam preparation, and specifies the action they would like the neighbour to take, such as to 'find alternate furthermore, using freehand and slow volume.' Although the tone fluctuates somewhat between polite requests and direct threats—such as 'I will take an action'—the purpose of the letter is still clearly communicated. Ideas are relevant, but some parts are under-developed or expressed in a confusing manner, particularly regarding the requested actions. Overall, the requirements of the task are addressed, placing this response at Band 5.5, which aligns with the partial development of ideas and somewhat unclear positioning.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some organisation, but it lacks a clear overall progression and suffers from poor paragraphing and sentence demarcation. Sentences frequently run into one another or are awkwardly punctuated, such as 'When my routine is affecting also effect my exam. Please be control late night listen the music'. Paragraph breaks are sporadic and do not effectively guide the reader through distinct points of the letter. Cohesive devices are either inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, with phrases like 'But on the otherhand' and 'This is because' applied incorrectly or repetitively. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as 'All are accept because my next door neighbour'. These issues mean the overall arrangement is only partially coherent, warranting a Band 5.0 for this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and basic, with noticeable errors that frequently cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some less common expressions, but these are often incorrect in form or collocation, such as 'using freehand and slow volume', 'posssitive respons', and 'certen reason'. Spelling errors are also present, including 'writting', 'distrub', 'altrernate', 'aprove', and 'certen'. While the basic message about noise and exams manages to get across, the lexical range is minimally adequate at best. Frequent word-choice errors and incorrect forms place this writing firmly at Band 5.0, as the vocabulary struggles to convey precise meaning reliably.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The student uses a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside frequent, faulty attempts at more complex constructions. There are persistent, major errors in grammar, tense, and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include 'Iam writting', 'Which is affecting my studies', 'This is because really distrub my sleep', 'Please be control late night listen the music', and 'we have facing difficulty'. Subject-verb agreement errors, incorrect verb forms, and missing auxiliary verbs occur in almost every sentence. Punctuation is also heavily flawed, with misplaced commas and periods disrupting the flow. Because errors are frequent and often cause severe difficulty for the reader, this merits a Band 4.5.
