IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I am writting this to request reduction of volume of music which you play at night, the same causing difficulties in my studies and sleep.

I completely understand that you might be enjoying the loud music at night, but Same is hampering my studies. I live next door and as our apartment is connected the music directly is very much audiable through the walls. I have my final exams approaching and I need a complete focus on my studies, parallally maintain my sleep cycle.

I request your assistance if you could lower the volume specifically after 10 PM till around 2 AM till end of the month. If possible you can also avoid playing music at night. This will really help me getting better scores.

I hope you will consider my request and will try and avoid loud music untill my exams are completed.

Yours Faithfully,

Kushagra Shinde

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the task. You successfully explain what the problem is by stating that your new neighbours play music late at night. You outline why it is causing difficulties by mentioning your upcoming final exams, the need for complete focus, and the importance of maintaining your sleep cycle. Finally, you suggest a clear action you would like them to take, which is to lower the volume after 10 PM until the end of the month. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and all aspects of the prompt are well addressed, demonstrating a clear and purposeful response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard formal letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the problem description, the requested action, and the closing. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, though some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the use of 'the same causing difficulties' and 'parallally'. However, the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow and meets the expectations for a coherent response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional phrases such as 'final exams approaching', 'sleep cycle', and 'lower the volume'. However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'writting' with a double 't', using 'the same causing difficulties' instead of 'which is causing difficulties', and employing the non-standard word 'parallally' instead of 'concurrently' or 'at the same time'. These vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If possible you can also avoid...') and relative clauses. There are a few grammatical and punctuation errors present, notably the spelling slip in 'writting', awkward referencing in 'the same causing', and a missing preposition or article in phrases like 'help me getting better scores' (should be 'help me to get' or 'help me get'). Despite these recurring minor errors, your meaning remains clear throughout, and the grammar does not obstruct the reader's understanding.
