IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Shah,

I am writing to bring to your attention a matter regarding a disturbance that occurs while you're playing late night music.

To provide some specific context, for the last 2 weeks, your family is listening the music at high volume during night time. Hence, it is creating a noise pollution across the neighbourhood and it also affected to us during that particular period.

Regarding the inconvenience, I have exams next week and due to the load music sound, it has become challenging for me to concentrate on studies. Plus, it has also affected my sleep during bed time.

In light of these circumstances, I would suggest that either you can enjoy the music by lowering the volume of a music system or you can enjoy the music during the evening time.

I hope you will consider my request favourably, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Anshu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student covers all bullet points required by the prompt successfully. The letter clearly explains the problem by stating that the neighbour is playing late-night music, outlines why this causes difficulties (due to upcoming exams next week and disrupted sleep), and suggests appropriate actions to resolve the issue (lowering the volume or listening during the evening instead). The tone is polite and appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. All parts of the task are well-addressed with relevant details, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is organised logically with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing specific aspects of the situation, and a polite concluding paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the problem, the consequences, and the proposed solutions. Cohesive devices like 'Regarding the inconvenience', 'Plus', and 'In light of these circumstances' are used to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, there is a clear logical progression throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a semi-formal complaint letter, such as 'bring to your attention', 'circumstances', and 'considerably'. However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'listening the music' instead of 'listening to music', 'load music sound' instead of 'loud music', and 'affected to us' instead of 'affected us'. Despite these word-choice and collocation errors, communication is never impeded, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to bring to your attention a matter regarding a disturbance that occurs while you're playing late night music.' There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with verb tenses and prepositions, including 'your family is listening' instead of 'has been listening', and 'affected to us'. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the sentence structures are sufficiently varied to meet the criteria for Band 6.
