IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Dean,
I am your neighbour living right next to your flat. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the loud music you play everyday till late night. As my room and your living area have same wall, I hear all the loud music and all the discussions you do at night.
In next fifteen days, I have my final year exams. The music is so loud that I am not able to concentrate on my studies. Every time I try to study I get distraced by the loud noise and music sound coming from your side. Not only my studies, my sleep is also getting disturbed. I am not able to sleep peacefully. If my sleep is not proper, I cannot concentrate on my studies.
I would request you to lower the volume for the music and avoid playing loud music especially from 12.00 am to 4.00 am as that is the time I prepare for my forthcoming exams. If the loud music still continues I will file the compliant against you to the condo management.
I hope you will cooperate with me.
With Sincerly,
Sakshi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully satisfies all requirements of the task. The student successfully adopts an appropriate semi-formal tone for a neighbourly letter. All three bullet points from the prompt are thoroughly covered: the problem is clearly explained (loud music and discussions late at night), the difficulties it causes are well elaborated (inability to concentrate on final year exams and severe sleep deprivation), and the desired action is explicitly stated (lowering the volume between 12.00 am and 4.00 am, with a warning about management). The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is transparent throughout. The response aligns well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear logical organisation and progression. It starts with an appropriate salutation and clear statement of purpose, moves into the consequences of the noise in the second paragraph, details the specific request and warning in the third paragraph, and closes politely. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are generally well handled, such as 'Not only my studies, my sleep is also getting disturbed' and 'If the loud music still continues'. While referencing and cohesion are mostly effective, there are minor mechanical transitions, placing this securely at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, using functional phrases like 'express my concerns', 'concentrate on my studies', and 'severe sleep deprivation' (implied). There are some attempts at less common items, though some word choices and collocations are slightly unnatural or inaccurate, such as 'discussions you do', 'music sound', and 'file the compliant' (instead of complaint). However, these lexical slips do not impede communication, and the overall vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly, fitting the Band 6 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If my sleep is not proper, I cannot concentrate') and subordinate clauses. There are several grammatical and mechanical errors present, including missing articles ('in next fifteen days'), preposition misuse ('living right next to your flat', 'complaint against you to'), and a sign-off error ('With Sincerly'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the writer maintains good control over the core message. This performance reflects the characteristics of Band 6.
