IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear ABC,

I would like to divert your attention towards an issue that has been causing a lot of distress lately. I have examiantions soon and I am unable to take adequate sleep and concentrate on my studies due to late night music played by you.

I have been following a strict study plan due to my examinations where I study for 8-9 hours in a day. After my afternoon classes, I mostly study at night. Late night music has become a hinderence in my school revision. Because of disturbed schedule, my grades has lowered and eventually my confidence has shattered for my upcoming examinations. Loud music at night has also disturbed my sleep cycle. Because of less sleep, I often feel anxious and less energetic throughout the day.

I would like to request you to use headphones after dusk, which will you to enjoy your music as well it will help create less disturbance for nearby flats.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by explaining the issue regarding late-night music, describing the difficulties it causes for studies and sleep, and requesting a specific action, namely the use of headphones. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a neighbour. All three bullet points are addressed, though the explanation of why it causes difficulties could be extended further to achieve a higher band. For instance, the mention of lower grades and shattered confidence is relevant, but the development remains slightly generalised. Ideas are generally clear and presented with a consistent position throughout, reflecting a solid performance where all requirements are met adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from stating the problem to detailing its impact, and finally proposing a solution. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, such as the daily study routine in the second paragraph and the request in the third. While paragraphing and sequencing are logical, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'because of' to link ideas. Referencing is mostly clear, though smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the flow. The transition from the introductory statement to the body paragraphs is handled well, ensuring the reader can easily follow the sequence of thoughts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the message without impeding communication. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'strict study plan', 'adequate sleep', and 'disturbed schedule'. However, there are a few spelling and word choice errors, such as 'examiantions' instead of 'examinations' and 'hinderence' instead of 'hindrance'. Additionally, phrases like 'take adequate sleep' and 'grades has lowered' show minor inaccuracies in collocation and word form. The lexical range provides sufficient flexibility for the purpose, though occasional slips keep it within this level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I have been following a strict study plan due to my examinations where I study for 8-9 hours in a day.' There are some grammatical errors in agreement and phrasing, notably 'grades has lowered' instead of 'grades have lowered' and 'unable to take adequate sleep' where a different verb would be more natural. Punctuation is generally controlled, and these errors rarely impede communication. To reach a higher level, the student would need to demonstrate a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and more consistent control over subject-verb agreement.
