IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear rahul,

I hope you are doing well and congratulations for the flat you owened recently. I am writing this letter to let you know that your late night music is affecting my studies.

Currently I am a student and do a part time job. In the morning, I go to school and after that i go for work and exams are coming next week owing to that I do study late night but your music system is too loud due to that I am not able to concentrate on my studies.

I would really appreciate if you stop the music after 9:00 PM or reduce the voice so I can focus on my studies.

I hope we can be good neighbours going forward and thanks for your time and understanding.

Best wishes,

Arshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses all parts of the task by explaining the problem of late-night music, describing how it causes difficulties with your studies and upcoming exams, and requesting specific action from your neighbour. However, some areas are slightly under-developed, such as the full impact on your sleep schedule. Furthermore, the response is slightly below the required word count, coming in at 135 words rather than the minimum of 150 words. To reach a higher band, all bullet points should be extended with more fully developed supporting details and the length requirement must be fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose and a polite, semi-formal semi-friendly tone appropriate for a neighbour. Paragraphing is used to separate the greeting, the explanation, the request, and the sign-off logically. Cohesion between sentences is generally clear, though referencing can feel a bit repetitive, relying heavily on consecutive run-on patterns like 'due to that'. To achieve a higher band, the progression of ideas could be smoothed out with a more varied and flexible use of cohesive devices, and paragraph transitions could be managed with greater sophistication.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your everyday message about noise disturbances and exams. There are, however, some spelling, word-form, and collocation errors, such as writing 'owened' instead of 'owned', 'late night' instead of 'late at night', and 'reduce the voice' instead of 'turn down the volume'. These minor lexical slips do not impede communication, but they highlight a somewhat limited vocabulary range. To reach a higher level, you should incorporate less common lexical items and pay closer attention to natural collocations and accurate word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to construct subordinate clauses, as seen in 'I would really appreciate if you stop the music...'. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalization for 'rahul' and 'i', a comma splice in the second paragraph, and tense inconsistencies such as 'if you stop' instead of 'if you stopped'. These errors rarely impede communication, but they reflect a limited control over complex grammatical patterns. To improve, you should focus on eliminating basic punctuation slips and ensuring greater accuracy when forming conditional and compound sentences.
