IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Raj,

I hope you're settled well at your new house. I am writing this letter to complaint about the loud music coming out from your place. It has been causing significant problem to my sleep and study schedule.

The most important problem is I have my exams starting from the next week. I have made a plan to wake up early in the morning to study, but the loud music from your place is causing trouble getting an enough sleep.

This has caused difficulties such as feeling tired and demotivated in the morning. I have a habbit to start my day early at 4 AM in the morning to study, but due to lack of sleep I am not able to concentrate during study sessions. I believe I could fail in my exams as I have a lot of syllabus to complete.

Therefore, I would suggest you to lower down the volume level after 10 PM. If you are planning to host a party in the near future, I would suggest hosting it at the community town hall in our society because it has soundproof walls. Should you require more details or information about booking a community hall, I am happy to assist you further.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours sincerely,

Preet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

You have done a fantastic job covering all parts of the task fully and effectively. You successfully explained the problem by stating that the loud music coming from Raj's place is affecting your sleep and study schedule. You elaborated clearly on the difficulties it causes, such as feeling tired, demotivated, and lacking concentration during your early morning study sessions before your upcoming exams. Furthermore, you provided a clear and polite action you would like them to take by suggesting they lower the volume after 10 PM or consider hosting parties at the community town hall. Your ideas are well developed and extended naturally throughout the letter, hitting all the requirements of the prompt with appropriate tone and purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct and appropriate focus, moving smoothly from the opening greeting and statement of the problem in the first paragraph, to the specific difficulties in the second and third paragraphs, and finally to your proposed solutions in the concluding body paragraph. You use logical transitions and cohesive devices well, such as 'This has caused difficulties', 'Therefore', and 'If you are planning to host a party', which help guide the reader through your arguments. To reach an even higher standard, you could incorporate a slightly wider variety of advanced cohesive phrases to connect your sentences even more seamlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items and communicative phrases such as 'significant problem', 'demotivated', and 'community town hall'. However, your lexical resource is held back by a few word choice and collocation inaccuracies, as well as a spelling error. For instance, writing 'to complaint' instead of 'to complain', using the phrase 'getting an enough sleep' where 'getting enough sleep' is natural, and misspelling 'habbit' instead of 'habit'. To reach the next band level, you need to use a wider range of flexible, sophisticated vocabulary with greater precision, completely eliminating these minor spelling and word-form slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You show good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully using a mix of simple and complex sentence forms such as conditional structures ('If you are planning to host a party...') and relative clauses ('...which has soundproof walls'). There are frequent error-free sentences throughout your response, and communication is never impeded. However, a few persistent minor errors remain, such as the prepositional slip in 'coming out from your place' instead of 'coming from your place' and the redundant article in 'getting an enough sleep'. To achieve a higher band, you will need to demonstrate an even wider range of complex structures with greater grammatical precision and fewer minor slips.
