Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am Gopal, residing as your neighbor.
I am writing this letter to bring your attention about my the problem I'm facing since you moved here.
The biggest problem I'm facing is the noise which is caused by the sound system that you play everyday late night. I have my exams coming in few days. But due to the high volume of music, I cannot focus on my studies which may lead into poor results. Apart from this, my family members and I facing disturbance which affecting our sleep as well. My grandfather is sick and need a proper sleep, but he is getting disturbed.
I would like you to suggest to take an action for this. You can set a time to listen the music and also fix the volume as well, so that nobody get disturbed. I hope you will understand my problem and take an action to resolve the issue.
Thank you
Denny.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the letter prompt. You explained the problem clearly by mentioning the loud music from the sound system played late at night, and you described the difficulties it causes, such as disturbing your upcoming exams and preventing your grandfather from getting proper sleep. Furthermore, you suggested specific actions for them to take, such as setting a time limit and fixing the volume. However, the response sits at this level because some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation regarding your exams and the impact on your family could be extended with more specific details. To reach the next level, you need to ensure that every bullet point of the prompt is fully elaborated with richer, more sustained supporting ideas while maintaining a clear, appropriate tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow of ideas from explaining the situation to detailing the consequences and finally requesting a solution. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'so that' to connect your thoughts. However, referencing and paragraphing show some inconsistencies; for example, the opening lines mix the salutation and introduction in a slightly mechanical way, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as addressing the letter as 'Dear Sir' while writing directly to the neighbour, and signing off as 'Denny' after introducing yourself as 'Gopal'. To achieve a higher band, you must ensure seamless progression, precise referencing between sentences, and more natural paragraphing that clearly separates each main point of the message without any confusion in persona.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message to the neighbour. You made sensible attempts at less common vocabulary such as 'disturbed', 'consequences', and 'proper sleep', but there are noticeable errors in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'bring your attention about my the problem' instead of 'bring to your attention' or 'bring this problem to your attention'. There are also minor awkward collocations like 'take an action for this' instead of 'take action'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict your score. To move up to a higher band, you need to expand your range of vocabulary, use less common lexical items with greater precision, and demonstrate a stronger command of natural collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as using subordinate clauses like 'which is caused by the sound system' and 'so that nobody get disturbed'. However, there are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including verb form and subject-verb agreement issues like 'nobody get disturbed' instead of 'gets', and unnecessary prepositions or articles as seen in 'bring your attention about my the problem'. Additionally, tense and aspect usage falters slightly when you write 'my family members and I facing disturbance' by omitting the auxiliary verb 'are'. These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede the reader's understanding. To reach a higher band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over complex grammatical structures and verb patterns.
