Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Abrahim,

I am fine and hope this letter finds you in radiant health. I am writing this letter to inform you about the difficulties, I have been facing due to new neighbour shifted this week in our apartment.

I would like to mention that I am pursuing my graduation and have examination next week but I am unable to concentrate on my study due to loud sound of music late ate night. As you know, I am doing job day time therefore do preparation of exams at night. Moreover, I request him many times to lower the sound of music but he continue play music system at night with high volume that negatively affect my study as well as my sleep time. I request you to look into the matter and give strict instructions to new tenant to not play high volume music late at night. Apart from this, introduce penality for such tenants who do not follow the instruction for palying music system at night.

I looking forward to hear from you soon.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully address all parts of the task by explaining the problem regarding the new neighbours, describing the difficulties it causes with your upcoming examinations and sleep, and requesting specific action from the landlord, Mr. Abrahim. Your ideas are relevant and generally clear, fulfilling the requirements for a semi-formal letter of complaint. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or mixed between addressing the landlord and the neighbour directly, such as when you mention 'I request him many times' instead of focusing entirely on the landlord. To reach a higher level, you need to ensure all points are fully extended and well-developed with consistent tone throughout the entire response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established in the opening paragraphs and a standard closing format appropriate for a letter. You use some cohesive devices and paragraphing to separate your points, moving logically from the introduction of the issue to the impact on your studies, and finally to your requested actions. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the sudden shift in pronouns when discussing your interactions with the neighbour. To achieve a higher score, you should ensure smoother transitions between ideas and more precise referencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common phrases such as 'radiant health' and 'concentrate on my study'. However, there are notable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors that occasionally create awkwardness, such as 'neighbour shifted' instead of 'neighbours who moved in', 'late ate night' instead of 'late at night', and 'penality' instead of 'penalty'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they prevent you from reaching a higher band. To improve, you should focus on precision in word choice, correct word forms, and careful spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As you know, I am doing job day time therefore do preparation of exams at night.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('have examination', 'doing job'), incorrect prepositions ('at day time'), and tense inconsistencies ('he continue play'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the reader can easily follow your meaning. To move up to the next band, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences, particularly by maintaining better control over verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and article usage in complex structures.
