IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Swathi, living next door to the apartment number 108. I am writing to express my concern regarding the music you play late at night. Please allow me to explain how this concern me.

The music is loud especially after 8.pm, where people utilize their time to relax and sleep at the comfort of home. Since I am preparing for my upcoming exams, the loud music is a distraction. Moreover, it affects my concentration and quality of sleep. Furthermore, I work 7-3pm so night is the only time I can prepare myself for the exam.

I would really appreciate if you could lower the volume after 8 pm. I would also advise to make your apartment sound proof so you could enjoy at your wish.

I hope you understand my situation and make necessary arrangement. Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

Best Regards,

Aleena

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all requirements of the prompt by explaining the problem regarding the late-night music, describing why it causes difficulties with sleep and exam preparation, and clearly requesting action to lower the volume. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. However, the ideas are somewhat unevenly developed. For instance, the impact on studies is mentioned briefly, but some points could be extended further with more specific detail to fully reach a higher level. Additionally, there is a minor contradiction in names between the opening greeting 'Dear Sam' and the sign-off 'Best Regards, Aleena', following an introductory sentence stating 'My name is Swathi'. Despite these minor inconsistencies, the purpose of the letter is clear and all bullet points are adequately addressed, showing solid elements of the higher band while keeping some ideas under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression from the introduction of the problem to the requested solution. Information is grouped into logical paragraphs, with the second paragraph focusing on the difficulties caused and the third outlining the requested action. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Since', which helps guide the reader through the text. However, some referencing and cohesion feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. For example, starting multiple sentences with causal links or sequencing words slightly affects the natural flow of the writing. Paragraphing is generally handled sufficiently, but transitioning between the personal introduction and the core complaint could be smoother to fully achieve the fluidity expected at higher levels.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the message without impeding communication. The student attempts to use less common items and functional phrases, such as 'upcoming exams', 'concentration', and 'sound proof', demonstrating a sufficient range for the task. However, there are notable limitations and minor lexical inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, writing 'living next door to the apartment number 108' sounds slightly unnatural, and 'at the comfort of home' should ideally be 'in the comfort of home'. There are also minor awkward phrasings like 'how this concern me' instead of 'concerns me'. These errors do not block the reader's understanding, but they prevent the writing from achieving a wider, more precise lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses like 'Since I am preparing for my upcoming exams' and 'I would really appreciate if you could lower the volume'. There are some error-free sentences, demonstrating a foundational control over grammar and punctuation. However, several grammatical errors persist throughout the text. For example, there is a missing subject verb agreement in 'how this concern me', a preposition error in 'work 7-3pm', and missing articles in 'after 8 pm' or 'make necessary arrangement'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but these recurrent minor slips in verbs, prepositions, and singular/plural forms mean the writing sits firmly at this level, as complex structures still generate occasional faults.
