IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Rohan,

I hope you are doing well. I am Jahanvi, your neighbour. I am writing this letter regarding the late-night noise, which is affecting my studies and sleep.

I would like to inform you that my exams are coming soon, and for that I need to study late at night. The loud music which you play at night makes it difficult for me to concentrate on my studies. Not only affects my studies but also disturbs my sleep cycle.

Furthermore, I would like to request that you please stop playing music at a loud sound in between of 9 pm to 12 pm. This causes significant problems for my upcoming examination results and my sleep.

I would appreciate it if you could do what I mentioned above. Otherwise, I will have to take strict action on this by complaining to the owner about these issues.

I hope you will work on the mentioned problem. Thank you for your time.

Yours faithfully,

Jhanavi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the task by explaining the problem of late-night noise, detailing how it affects your upcoming exams and sleep cycle, and requesting that the music be stopped between specific hours. You also establish an appropriate semi-formal tone and a clear persona throughout the communication. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the description of how it affects your studies is slightly repetitive, and your threat of taking strict action to the owner lacks the nuance required for a higher band. To achieve a higher score, you should ensure that all bullet points are extended with equally well-developed supporting details and maintain a consistently appropriate level of tact in your requests.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the greeting through the problem description and request to the sign-off. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate different points, such as the introduction of the issue, the specific impact on your exams, the request, and the concluding warning. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, as seen in the transition 'Furthermore, I would like to request that you please stop playing music at a loud sound in between of 9 pm to 12 pm', where the connection between paragraphs could flow more naturally. To move higher, you need to use a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing between sentences is consistently smooth and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with appropriate phrases such as 'affecting my studies and sleep' and 'upcoming examination results'. You also make some attempts at less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, writing 'play music at a loud sound' instead of 'play loud music', and 'in between of 9 pm to 12 pm' instead of 'between 9 pm and midnight', detracts from the precision of your writing. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider variety of precise lexical items and demonstrate better control over natural collocations and word forms without relying on basic or slightly awkward phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your response features a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as 'I would appreciate it if you could do what I mentioned above.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, though they rarely impede communication. For instance, the sentence 'Not only affects my studies but also disturbs my sleep cycle' is missing a subject pronoun, leading to a grammatical error, and there are minor prepositional slips like 'in between of'. To reach a higher level, you should incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with a higher frequency of error-free sentences, ensuring that dependent clauses and modifiers are accurately constructed.
