- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter request you to not play any music during the night time as it is affecting my studies and sleep and I have my universities exams coming soon.
To begin with, Since couple of days, I could not able to sleep because of the loud music at night time and it has been affecting my sleep schedule. Hence, I can not able to give my attention on my study.
Furthermore, my exams are coming soon in the next month. Due to the high volume of the music, I can not remember anything in my study. As a result , I have to wake up early in the morning. So, could you please try to lower the volume in the night time? I hope you can understand my situation. I appreciate your help with this matter.
Thank you for your kind attention to this matter.
Your's sincerely,
Riddhi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score by addressing what the problem is, why it is causing difficulties, and what action the writer would like the neighbour to take. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the repeated mention of exams and sleep disruption without extending the impact further. To reach a higher band, the response would need to fully develop every bullet point with greater depth and clearer elaboration on how the situation affects daily routines.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, and appropriate paragraphing is used to separate the greeting, introduction, body points, and sign-off. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'As a result', but some feel a bit mechanical or are used with faulty referencing. For instance, 'Since couple of days' disrupts the logical flow slightly. To achieve a higher band, the progression of ideas needs to be smoother, and referencing between sentences must be managed more naturally without relying on repetitive transitional formulas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the message with everyday terms such as 'loud music', 'sleep schedule', and 'volume'. The writer makes some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by word choice errors and incorrect word forms, such as 'universities exams' instead of 'university exams' and 'night time'. There are also minor spelling and collocation lapses that do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer must use a wider range of lexical items with greater precision, demonstrating better control over collocations and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses in 'as it is affecting my studies'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout, including 'I am writing this letter request you' instead of 'to request you', 'Since couple of days, I could not able to sleep' instead of 'For a couple of days, I have not been able to sleep', and 'Your's sincerely' instead of 'Yours sincerely'. These errors in verb forms, infinitives, and punctuation occur consistently, though they rarely impede overall communication. To progress further, the writer needs to produce more frequent error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over complex grammatical patterns.
