Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the core requirements of a general training correspondence task. You clearly explain the problem of the late night music, describe how it is causing difficulties with your upcoming exams and sleep, and state the action you expect them to take. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of how it affects your health could be expanded further. Your tone is appropriately direct for a semi-formal complaint letter, maintaining a clear position throughout. To reach the next level, you need to ensure that every bullet point is fully explored with extended supporting details rather than brief statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established right from the opening. You use an appropriate letter format, including standard salutations and sign-offs, and paragraphs are generally organised around distinct points such as the problem, the consequences, and the warning. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on basic transitions, and referencing within sentences could be smoother. For example, expressions like 'After that' feel a bit abrupt. To achieve a higher band, you should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that the progression of ideas from the problem to the threatened action flows seamlessly without noticeable gaps.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'full time student and part-time wharehouse worker' and 'significantly tight'. However, there are notable spelling errors, such as 'wharehouse' instead of warehouse, 'wil' instead of will, and 'prepration' instead of preparation. Furthermore, there are some minor word-choice inaccuracies, such as saying 'disturbing me' instead of 'has been disturbing me' or 'make volume lower' instead of 'turn the volume down'. These lexical slips and spelling mistakes do not impede communication, but keeping them to a minimum is essential for moving up to a higher vocabulary band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You present a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary your structures. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions ('Due high volume' instead of 'Due to the high volume'), tense issues ('it is affect' instead of 'it is affecting'), and prepositional errors ('complain it' instead of 'complain about it to'). While these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout, they recur frequently enough to keep the response at this level. To improve your grammatical score, you should focus on sharpening your control over verb forms, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and accurate sentence construction.
