IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbor's,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to kindly inform you about an issue that has been affecting me recently,

Over the past few weeks, I have noticed that loud music is often played late at night, usually between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. The volume is quite high, and it can be clearly heard inside my home.

This has been affecting my sleep, as I find it difficult to rest properly with the noise. As a result, I often feel tired the next day, which impacts my daily activities and concentration.

I completely understand that everyone likes to enjoy their time at home, and I respect that. However, I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume of the music, especially during late hours. This would help maintain a peaceful rnvironment for both of us.

Thank you for your understanding, and I hope we can resolve this matter amicable.

Kind regards,

Mamta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt adequately, satisfying the requirements to explain the problem, its impact, and the desired action. For instance, the student clearly identifies the issue by stating that 'loud music is often played late at night', describes the difficulty by noting how it impacts sleep and concentration, and outlines the requested action by asking them to 'lower the volume'. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended, which is characteristic of this level. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining clarity throughout without drifting off-topic.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from the initial greeting and statement of purpose to the problem, its consequences, and the polite request for resolution. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct thoughts into clear blocks of text. Cohesive devices are functional, though some referencing and transitions between sentences are slightly straightforward rather than sophisticated. This demonstrates the solid organizational traits of the lower band while showing glimpses of the smooth logical sequencing required for higher bands, reflecting a balanced performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting some less common phrases such as 'impacts my daily activities and concentration' and 'peaceful environment'. While there are minor errors—such as the typographical slip 'rnvironment' and a minor grammatical/form word slip with the closing adverb 'amicable' instead of the adverb 'amicably'—these lexical and spelling errors do not impede communication. The word choices are generally relevant and sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, aligning well with the expected standard for this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response features a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as the use of subordinate clauses in 'which impacts my daily activities' and 'as I find it difficult'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably the incorrect apostrophe in the opening salutation ('Neighbor's' instead of 'Neighbors' or 'Neighbours'). However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message easily. The grammatical control shown meets the requirements of the lower band fully while maintaining good overall readability.
