Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by explaining the problem of loud music, describing how it affects your sleep and studies for upcoming exams, and requesting that they stop. However, the length requirement is not met, as the text contains only 125 words, falling short of the 150-word minimum. Furthermore, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, particularly regarding the specific actions you want them to take beyond a general request. To reach a higher band, the response must fully meet the minimum word count and extend the ideas with more elaboration and support for each bullet point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the letter, as it opens with an appropriate salutation and moves through the issues, but there is no clear overall progression due to the fragmented structure and lack of standard paragraphing. Cohesive devices are very basic and sometimes inaccurate, such as repetitive transitions and abrupt shifts between ideas, for instance moving straight from your exam preparation to the closing sign-off without proper links. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which makes the flow mechanical. To improve coherence and cohesion, you should group your ideas into logical paragraphs with clear topic sentences and use a wider, more natural range of cohesive devices to connect your points smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'disturbed' and 'concerate', but there are noticeable errors in word form, spelling, and word choice that cause some difficulty for the reader, including 'concerate' instead of concentrate, 'apperiate' instead of appreciate, and 'ruined up'. Additionally, informal contractions and colloquial phrasing affect the register of the letter. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, improve your spelling, and demonstrate better control over word forms and collocations suitable for a semi-formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response shows a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic connectors. When you attempt more complex structures, they are often faulty, such as in the sentence 'i just want inform you regarding that i am disturbed because of your loud music'. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, including missing capital letters at the start of sentences and with proper nouns like 'Harwinder singh', as well as missing auxiliary verbs and prepositions. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, you should focus on basic sentence construction, accurate verb forms, and correct punctuation.
