IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I hope you are well settled in your new house.I am writting to discuss a serious matter which is causing inconvenience.

For past few nights i have heard quite loud music coming from your house , often until after midnight . I understand you might be celeberating moving in , the volume is quiet high.

The reason i am writting is that i have my exams in the coming week.Due to noise at night i am unable to concentrate on my studies and losing sleep. As my exam are extremly important for my future career.

I would be very grateful if you could lower the volume after 10 pm or use headphone durring late hours. This small consideration will help me immensely.

I hope you understand my situation and i look forward to a positive response.

Your sincerely

Amina

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully addressed all parts of the prompt by explaining the problem of the late-night music, describing why it causes difficulties due to your upcoming exams, and requesting specific actions such as lowering the volume or using headphones. However, your response sits below the word count requirement, falling short of the minimum one hundred and fifty words, which prevents a higher score. Additionally, while all bullet points are covered, some ideas, such as the impact on your future career, are somewhat brief and could have been extended further to fully develop the response. To improve, ensure you always write past the minimum length requirement and fully elaborate on each point with supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, polite opening and appropriate sign-off. You organized your thoughts into logical paragraphs that separate the greeting, the issue, the impact, the proposed solution, and the closing. Because you demonstrate a solid organizational structure while successfully utilizing some cohesive devices like 'Due to' and 'As', you meet the lower standard securely and display some characteristics of higher bands. However, referencing is occasionally mechanical, and paragraph transitions could be smoother. To reach the next band, work on using a wider variety of cohesive devices naturally and ensure your ideas flow seamlessly from sentence to sentence without abrupt transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with common phrases like 'serious matter', 'concentrate on my studies', and 'positive response'. You attempted some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'writting' instead of 'writing', 'celeberating' instead of 'celebrating', and using 'quiet high' instead of 'quite high'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, which places your lexical performance at this level. To improve, pay closer attention to spelling and ensure you select the correct word forms and collocations, such as choosing more precise academic or formal alternatives for everyday words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I would be very grateful if you could lower the volume...' successfully. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as spacing issues before punctuation marks (e.g., 'house.I', 'house ,', 'reason i'), missing articles in phrases like 'For past few nights', and subject-verb agreement slips like 'As my exam are'. Despite these errors, your meaning remains clear and they rarely impede communication. The majority of your sentences are constructed reasonably well. To achieve a higher band, aim for greater control over punctuation spacing, articles, and pluralisation, while incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures.
