IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbors,

I hope you are all doing well. I am to express my concern about a loud music coming from your home late at night. Since you recently moved in, I have noticed that music is usually played at high pace, particularly in the evening and sometimes late.

Unfortunately, this is causing me considerable difficulty because I am currently preparing for my exams, which will going to held soon. The noise creates arduous situation for me to concentrate properly while studying and late-night music also disturbs my sleeping patterns. As a result, I feel tired and find it harder to focus and study effectively the following day. I am becoming increasingly worried that this may negatively affect my examination performance.

I would therefore be grateful if you could reduce the volume of the music, especially after 10 p.m. I expect you should keep the noise low after these hours.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yours sincerely,

Ahsan Amin

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by explaining the problem regarding late-night music, describing the difficulties it creates for upcoming examinations and sleep patterns, and clearly requesting specific action from the neighbours. The writer adopts an appropriate semi-formal tone and maintains a clear purpose throughout the letter. The ideas are extended and supported, such as explaining how fatigue affects the following day's focus, although the tone in the final paragraph shifts slightly into a more demanding stance ("I expect you should") rather than remaining entirely polite and persuasive. Overall, the communication of the message is effective, fulfilling all core requirements of this task type.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression from the initial greeting and statement of purpose to the detailed explanation of difficulties and the concluding request. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, with the opening and closing remarks cleanly separated from the body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as referencing ("this", "these hours") and logical connectors ("Unfortunately", "As a result", "I would therefore") are used adequately to guide the reader through the text. While referencing is generally clear, paragraph-level transitions could be slightly smoother, but the overall arrangement remains coherent and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general correspondence task, successfully attempting less common items and phrases such as "considerable difficulty", "preparing for my exams", and "sleeping patterns". However, there are some minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies, such as writing "a loud music" instead of "loud music" or "high pace" instead of "high volume". Spelling is generally accurate, and word-choice errors do not impede communication. To move towards a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate more precision in collocations and incorporate a wider variety of sophisticated, less common lexical items with natural control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures effectively, as seen in sentences like "I am becoming increasingly worried that this may negatively affect my examination performance." There are some noticeable grammatical errors present, such as the tense and infinitive slip in "which will going to held soon" (instead of "which are going to be held soon") and the missing article in "arduous situation". However, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication. Good punctuation control is maintained throughout, and the majority of simple structures remain entirely accurate.
