IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Respeted neighbours,

Hope you are doing well. My examinations are around the corner. I have to appear in that but i am facing a little difficulty in my preprations. I want to talk you about your late night music because it is very disturbing for all neighbours. Night is a time when we feel peace and get relaxed after busy routine. But your late night loud music is affecting my studies.

i also want to share that we had a sick lady in our neighbourhood. music, horns etc. these all sounds are irritating for her. Since we live in a society, we all know about the rights of neighbours, so thats why I was asking to cooperate in this matter. I know you like the music, it is very rela Please make sure to keep it

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response only partially addresses the task and falls short of the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, finishing at 136 words. While the writer manages to mention the main problem concerning the late night music and touches upon the difficulties it causes for examinations and a sick neighbour, the ideas remain limited and under-developed. Furthermore, the response is incomplete and cuts off abruptly at the end with the incomplete sentence 'Please make sure to keep it', failing to fully explain what action should be taken or properly conclude the letter. To reach a higher level, all bullet points in the prompt must be fully extended, and the required length must be met with a fully finished response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some basic organisation in the letter, starting with a salutation and attempting to group ideas into short paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes inadequate or repetitive, as seen in the frequent restarting of simple sentences without smooth transitions. Paragraphing is also irregular and fragmented. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as 'I have to appear in that' where the pronoun reference is weak. To improve coherence and cohesion, the writer needs to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive links to connect sentences logically and ensure that paragraphs are properly developed with a clear organizational structure throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some common terms related to the situation, such as 'examinations', 'preparations', and 'neighbourhood', but spelling errors like 'Respeted' and 'preprations', along with awkward word choices and phrasing like 'we had a sick lady', cause some difficulty and strain for the reader. There is also an incomplete vocabulary attempt at the end of the text. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical resource by using less common vocabulary accurately, paying closer attention to word formation, collocation, and correct spelling to ensure smooth and precise communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles, such as 'talk you about', 'all neighbours', and lower-case sentence starts like 'i also want'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and distraction for the reader. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of grammatical structures with improved accuracy, maintaining better control over verb forms, prepositions, and basic sentence mechanics to produce sentences that are mostly error-free.
