IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mrs. Patel,

I am writing this letter to inform you about noise coming from your house which is disturbing my study and sleep as I am appearing for examination, so could you please lower the noise specially at night time.

As I have exam next week, I cannot focus on my study and this week is very important as I need to focus. Addionally, sometimes you are doing parties with your friends and family late night which affects my sleep.

The noise is distracting my study so when I try to remember important topics, I get trouble concentrating on particular subject. Also, I have a habit of sleeping early at night time, so I can wake up early in the morning and focus on subjects where I need work on.

I would like to request you if you avoid doing parties late nights, it would be great as I can sleep peacefully without any noise. Besides this, sometimes you play loud music which affects my study as my study room is next to your living room though could you lower the volume of your music for sometime.

I look forward to hearing from you and I hope you will understand my situation.

Yours sincerely,

Jinal Prajapati.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points: you explain that late-night parties and loud music are the problem, describe how they disrupt studying and sleep, and ask your neighbour to reduce the noise and avoid late parties. The reasons are relevant and supported with personal details, such as your exam being next week and your study room being beside the living room. Your polite, clear request maintains an appropriate letter purpose throughout. To make the response more fully developed, specify a practical arrangement—for example, asking that music be turned down after a particular time—and avoid repeating the effects of noise on concentration. This would make the requested action more precise and strengthen an otherwise clear response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, explains its effects, makes requests, and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Additionally,” “Also,” and “Besides this” guide the reader. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence combines the purpose, the effect, and the request in one long sequence, while “Besides this” introduces another example rather than a contrasting point. The two paragraphs about study difficulties also repeat similar information, which weakens progression. Use clearer links between each problem and its consequence, and group the requests together in a concise final body paragraph to make the organisation smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint and its effects, including “disturbing,” “distracting,” “concentrating,” and “peacefully.” These choices suit the topic, and the reader can understand your main points. However, some wording is repetitive or imprecise: “focus on my study” and “affects my study” recur, while “doing parties” and “late nights” are not natural collocations. There is also a spelling error in “Addionally.” Aim for more precise, natural phrases for noise and its impact, and vary repeated references to studying. For example, you could describe the noise as “disrupting my revision” and say that it “makes it difficult to concentrate.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “as,” “so,” and “though,” and your meaning is generally clear. Some sentence forms, however, are not controlled accurately. For example, “As I have exam next week” needs an article, and “I would like to request you if you avoid doing parties” has an awkward clause structure. The opening sentence also joins several ideas with commas, making it difficult to follow. Practise forming polite requests with a clear structure, such as “Could I ask you to keep the music down after 10 p.m.?” Check articles and sentence boundaries, and use a full stop or a conjunction where ideas are currently joined by commas.
