IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Mr.Smith

I am writing this letter to inform you about an issue in my house because I feeling absolutely frustrated and worried about loud music and continuous disturbance created by my neighbour's flat.

To begin with, My final semester exams are due in the upcoming week and I am keen serious to perform well in my my mid-semester test, however, I am getting disturbed and distracted my loud music and foots steps from door next to my flat.

I truly understand that enjoyment is a crucial part of the life, that is the reason I talked with the owner of the flat and his words were rude and he denied to cooperate with me on this serious concern. After midnight I am unable to take my nap, therefore, I feel sleepy and numerous health related issues during my working hours.

Therefore, I request you to look into this matter, otherwise I have to leave vacate this property and I request you to initiate the refund on failing to solve this issue.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and regards,

Tarspreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the central problem—late-night music and noise—and explain its effects on your exam preparation, sleep, and wellbeing. You also make a request for the matter to be addressed. However, the response only partly fulfils the task because the requested action is not specific: “look into this matter” does not clearly ask the neighbours to lower or stop the music at a particular time. The proposed refund and leaving the property also shift attention away from resolving the noise problem, and it is unclear whether you are writing to the neighbour or a property owner. Develop the request directly and keep the letter’s purpose clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable sequence: it introduces the disturbance, explains its impact, describes an attempted conversation, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and connectors such as “To begin with,” “therefore,” and “I am looking forward to hearing from you” guide the reader. Some links are mechanical or unclear, however. “Therefore” introduces a request, but the following threat to leave and seek a refund does not follow smoothly from the earlier explanation. The opening also says the issue is “in my house,” while later details refer to a flat and its owner, making the situation less clear. Use a consistent recipient and connect each paragraph more directly to the requested solution.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary to describe the situation and its consequences, including “loud music,” “disturbed and distracted,” “unable to take my nap,” and “health related issues.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “look into this matter” and “I am looking forward to hearing from you.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “keen serious,” “foots steps,” “take my nap,” and “initiate the refund on failing to solve this issue.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. Aim for natural, precise phrases such as “concentrate on my studies,” “footsteps,” and “request a refund if the problem is not resolved.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including longer sentences with “however,” “therefore,” and “otherwise,” and the reader can generally understand the main message. However, errors are frequent, and complex sentences are often not controlled successfully. For example, “I feeling absolutely frustrated” needs a finite verb, while “I am keen serious to perform well” has an incorrect construction. In “I am getting disturbed and distracted my loud music,” the relationship between the verb and its cause is incomplete. Punctuation and sentence boundaries also need attention: the opening has no comma after the greeting, and several clauses are joined with commas. Practise accurate basic clauses first, then build longer sentences with clear connectors.
