IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Smith,

I hope every thing is going well. I am writing to let you know about an issue which I have been facing from a couple of days.

As you may know, the sound of music that comes from your house every night is too loud that it is extremely disturbing.

I thought i should discuss with you that i used to read my course text books at night as i have less time during day due to my busy schedule. My exams are scheduled next week and more prepration is required.I am feeling much difficulty in concentrating on studies because of loud sound of music.

Would it be possible to reduce the volume especially at night so that i can focus better on my studies. I would be grateful if you could consider my request.I hope this issue can be resolved soon.

Thanks for your consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Sabiha Waheed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you identify the late-night music, explain that it disrupts your concentration while preparing for exams, and request that the neighbour reduce the volume at night. The purpose and polite tone are clear, and the specific detail that your exams are next week helps make the request relevant. The explanation of why you study at night—because your daytime schedule is busy—is also useful. However, the effect on sleep, which is part of the situation, is not explained, and the consequences of the noise could be developed further. To strengthen the letter, describe how it affects your rest as well as your revision, and make the requested action slightly more specific, such as asking for quiet after a particular time.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible order: greeting, description of the problem, explanation of its impact, request, and closing. This makes the overall message easy to follow. The links between ideas are generally clear, particularly in the sentence explaining that your busy daytime schedule leads you to study at night. However, most of the content is presented in one long body paragraph, so the problem and its effects are not visually separated. Some linking is also basic, with repeated use of “as” and “so that.” Divide the body into two paragraphs and use a few more precise transitions to show the relationship between the noise, your studies, and your need for sleep.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary that communicates the situation clearly, including “extremely disturbing,” “concentrating on studies,” and “consider my request.” The language is appropriately polite for a letter to a neighbour. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “facing from a couple of days,” “much difficulty,” and “course text books.” There are also spelling and word-form errors, including “prepration.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common phrases as complete units—for example, “for the past few days,” “difficulty concentrating,” and “course textbooks”—and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional request, “Would it be possible to reduce the volume … so that I can focus better.” This is a suitable structure for a polite complaint, and the main meaning remains clear. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. In “the sound … is too loud that,” the structure should be “so loud that”; “I used to read” does not clearly express your current study habit, for which “I read” or “I have been reading” would fit better. Capitalisation of “I” is inconsistent, and missing spaces after full stops make parts of the letter harder to read. Review these patterns and punctuate sentence boundaries consistently.
