IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Wicks,

I am writing to let you know about the problems I am facing due to the loud music coming from your house.

Nowadays, I am preparing for my exam which is scheduled in the next week. I am also doing a full-time job therefore, I prefer to study at night. However, I am having a lots of trouble concentrating in study because of the noisy environment. Every night, I can hear the loud music plays in your house which is making it so difficult for me to study.

At first, I thought that there is an event in your house but now I believe that it's just a music that someone is playing every night. Although I tried to close my room window to get quiet environment but it's not that effective. I would really appreciate if you could play your music at slow volume during the night time.

Warm regards,

Neel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: you explain that loud music is played at night, describe how it disrupts your exam preparation and sleep, and request that the neighbours lower the volume. The purpose and polite tone are clear throughout, and details such as your exam being next week and your full-time job make the difficulty understandable. The request is relevant, though “play your music at slow volume” could be more specific about the hours or ask them to stop playing music late at night. The effect on sleep is mentioned in the task but is not developed as clearly as the effect on studying. Extending that point and making the requested action more precise would strengthen an already complete response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a sensible progression: it introduces the complaint, explains your circumstances and the effect of the noise, then describes an attempted solution and makes a request. Paragraphing and the formal opening and closing suit the purpose. Linking expressions such as “However,” “At first,” and “Although” help connect the ideas, and the overall message is easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth: “At first, I thought that there is an event” shifts awkwardly from past to present, and the move from the window being ineffective to the request could be more clearly signposted. A more deliberate paragraph structure—for example, separating the impact from the proposed action—and clearer references would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the complaint clearly, including relevant phrases such as “loud music,” “concentrating,” and “noisy environment.” The tone is appropriately polite, particularly in “I would really appreciate if you could…”. However, the range is fairly basic and some combinations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “a lots of trouble,” “concentrating in study,” “get quiet environment,” and “slow volume.” These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common collocations for noise and study, and choose wording that describes the requested change accurately, such as reducing the volume or keeping music down late at night.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a contrast with “However” and a concession with “Although,” and the main meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur, but they rarely impede communication. For example, “I am having a lots of trouble” has an incorrect article and plural form, while “the loud music plays” needs a suitable verb form after “I can hear.” In “I am also doing a full-time job therefore,” punctuation is needed to separate the connected clauses. There is also a tense mismatch in “I thought that there is an event.” Review articles, agreement and verb patterns, and punctuate longer sentences carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
