IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Brown,

I hope your doing well. I am writing this letter regarding the disturbance which I am facing due to the late night music noise coming from your apartment.

As I know that our flats are quite close and has wall shared in between. Unfortunately, I am facing lot of an obstacls because of the high volumn of your music sounds coming from your flat at night time.

In couple months, I have my examination of my Nursing degree and I have to concentrate on my studies. I prefer to study in early morning and I go to bed early so that I can wake up early to study but owing to loud noise of music at night, I am facing disturbance to fall in sleep and losing my productivity in morning.

I am request you to lower the volumn of music at late night but have no objection with music in day time. I hope you will unterstand the situation as a good neighbour.

I am looking forward to hear from you the win-win situation for both of us.

Yours Faithfuly,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points clearly: it identifies late-night music as the problem, explains that it disrupts sleep and study before nursing examinations, and asks the neighbour to reduce the volume at night while allowing daytime music. The purpose and polite, conciliatory position remain clear throughout, and the request for a solution that works for both neighbours supports the letter’s aim. To make the ideas more fully developed, specify the hours when the music is most disruptive or suggest a practical limit, rather than relying on the general phrase “at late night.” The response is relevant and appropriately focused on resolving the problem.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it opens by explaining the reason for writing, describes the noise and its effects, then makes a request and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “Unfortunately,” “In couple months,” and “but” guide the reader through the explanation. The sequence from disrupted sleep to reduced morning productivity is especially easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however: “I am looking forward to hear from you the win-win situation” does not clearly express how the closing idea relates to the request. A more direct closing sentence would make the final transition clearer and cohesion more consistently natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation and includes relevant terms such as “disturbance,” “examination,” “concentrate,” and “productivity.” The writer also maintains a suitably polite tone. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice or collocation errors reduce precision, including “obstacls,” “volumn,” “music sounds,” and “unterstand.” Some phrases are awkward for this context, such as “late night music noise” and “in day time.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they show limited control of accurate, natural phrasing. Aim to learn common combinations for noise complaints and check spelling carefully before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentences, including the explanation beginning “I prefer to study in early morning and I go to bed early so that…” and the clause introduced by “owing to.” The main message remains understandable, but grammatical errors occur across the letter. For example, “I hope your doing well” needs the correct verb form, while “our flats are quite close and has wall shared in between” has problems with agreement and sentence construction. “I am request you” also uses an incorrect verb form, and “I am looking forward to hear” requires a gerund after “to.” Work on accurate verb patterns, agreement, and articles, then proofread each sentence. More reliable control of these structures would make the varied sentences easier to read.
