New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Singh,

It's been amazing living next door to you folks, i want to chat about something which bugging me lately and bothering me every day. I have been noticed that you are playing music especially when the lights up and its quite disturbing me a lot since I am preparing for my examinations, and I am unable ti concentrate properly on my studies.

Hence , donot geg me wrong , but everynight, it seems like to me I am living near the rock concert. currently , i am working on my thesis for my university course which needs my attention. after hearing loud music late at night i am sufferring from sleep deprivation and feeling under the weather everytime. Therefore , it is not only putting devastating impact on my sleep cycles but also reduce my concentration power.

It would be great if could try to keep the volume low of your music especially during late . I would really appreciate your understanding. i would definetely love to chat with you about our society.

yours faithfully,

Anmol

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you explain that late-night music is disturbing you, connect it to difficulty concentrating on exam preparation and to poor sleep, and ask your neighbours to lower the volume. The request is polite and appropriate for a letter to new neighbours. The effects are relevant, but some details are less fully developed: for example, you mention working on a university thesis without explaining how this relates to the upcoming examinations, and the request could specify a reasonable time or invite them to discuss a solution. A clearer, more consistent description of when the music is played would also make the problem easier to understand. Overall, the purpose is clear, though some ideas could be explained more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable structure: a greeting, an opening that introduces the concern, a paragraph describing its effects, and a closing request. Connectors such as “Hence” and “Therefore” help show relationships between ideas, and the progression from the noise to its impact and then to your request is generally clear. To make the organisation more polished, use paragraph breaks consistently and avoid connectors that sound forced or do not clearly express the relationship. The opening sentence combines several ideas, while the final invitation to chat about “our society” feels disconnected from the specific request. Clearer links between sentences and a more focused closing would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant expressions, including “sleep deprivation,” “concentrate,” and “devastating impact,” and the comparison to “a rock concert” conveys how loud the music feels. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the lights up,” “concentration power,” and “keep the volume low of your music.” There are also spelling errors, including “sufferring” and “definetely,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for natural phrases such as “late at night,” “concentration,” and “keep your music at a lower volume.” This would make your meaning more precise while retaining the useful range you already attempt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “not only … but also” and the conditional request beginning “It would be great if…”. However, errors in verb forms, sentence construction, agreement, and punctuation are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. For example, “I have been noticed” should be “I have noticed,” and “which bugging me” needs a verb form such as “which has been bothering me.” In “it is not only putting … but also reduce,” the verb forms should be parallel. Review sentence boundaries and capitalisation as well, particularly after full stops. More accurate control of these patterns would make your message easier to read.
