New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Neighbours,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing you to request that you play a music at late night as it is affecting my studies.

Currenty i am stuyding in senior secondary. I have a exams after one week but due to your late night music, i am unable to do focus on my study. Due to loud sound of your music i cannot do my study. You know study is important for me to get better grades in exam so please do not play music at late night or you can listen music by using your headphones. Another thing you can do keep the volume of sound low so i can do more concenterate on my study.

I hope you will understand my situation and implement possible solutions.

Warm Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the central problem—late-night music—and explain that it disrupts your studying before exams. You also make practical requests, including using headphones or lowering the volume, so the reader can understand what change you want. However, the explanation of the effect is brief and repetitive, and the impact on your sleep, which is part of the situation, is not addressed. The letter is also 14 words below the required minimum, so it needs more development. Add specific details, such as how late the music continues, how it affects your sleep, and what quiet hours you are requesting, while keeping the polite tone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter has a recognisable format, with a greeting, a paragraph explaining the situation, and a polite closing. The ideas are generally relevant and the requests follow the explanation. However, the body does not develop in a clear sequence: the point that music prevents you from studying is repeated in “unable to do focus on my study” and “I cannot do my study.” Linking phrases such as “Another thing” help introduce a second request, but the overall progression remains limited. Organise the body into a clearer sequence: describe the noise and its timing, explain its effects on both study and sleep, then state your preferred solution. This would make the message easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the main issue and your requests, including “late night music,” “loud sound,” “headphones,” and “volume.” The tone is appropriately polite. However, the range is limited, and several phrases are repetitive or unnatural, which can make the message less clear. For example, “do my study” is repeated, while “concenterate” is an inaccurate spelling and word form. More precise expressions for noise, concentration, and sleep would help you explain the problem without repeating the same wording. Aim to use natural collocations such as “concentrate on my studies” and “keep the volume down,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You communicate through mostly simple sentences and attempt to connect ideas with clauses such as “as it is affecting my studies” and “so I can do more…”. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and frequent grammatical errors sometimes make the message difficult to read. Examples include “I am writing you” (the verb pattern needs a preposition), “I have a exams,” and “I am unable to do focus.” Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “i am.” Practise accurate sentence patterns such as “I am writing to ask you to…” and “The noise makes it difficult for me to concentrate.” Using a few correctly formed complex sentences would improve clarity and control.
