IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope that you are doing fine. As you recently moved to this beautiful building I assume that you are pleased with this place. Altough, I am writting this letter to you for letting you know that I am student of computer science and Im also doing a part time job in a hotel. I am a very hardworking student and because of my job I only manage to find time for studies at night. However, the problem is that because of the music that you are listioning to late at night is too loud. Because of this i could not focus on my studies. I would never have camplained you if i was not not getting bother by it. I really tried to concentrate on my studies but i could not. All I want from is a humble request to keep your music volume down so i could concentrate on my studies. I would be very grateful to you for this act of kindness.

Yours Faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the central problem—late-night music—and explain that it prevents you from concentrating while you study. You also make a clear request for the neighbours to lower the volume, so the main purpose is understandable. However, the task asks you to explain both the effect on your studies and your sleep; the letter focuses almost entirely on studying and does not describe how your sleep is affected. Some details, such as your computer science course and hotel job, help explain your schedule, but the difficulties and requested action could be developed more fully—for example, specify a reasonable time for quiet or ask them to use headphones late at night. This leaves parts of the task only partially addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The letter follows a recognisable format, with a greeting, explanation of the problem, request, and sign-off. The reader can generally follow the main point, and words such as “However” and “Because of this” show attempts to connect ideas. However, the body is presented as one long paragraph, and the progression is not always smooth: the opening comments about the building lead abruptly into your studies and job, while the complaint and request are repeated. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “I would never have complained you if I was not not getting bother by it.” Organise the letter into short paragraphs—context, impact, and requested action—and use fewer, more precise transitions to make the sequence clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough everyday vocabulary to communicate the situation, including “part time job,” “focus on my studies,” and “music volume down.” However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors make the letter less clear or natural, such as “Altough,” “writting,” “listioning,” and “camplained.” Some expressions are also awkward, including “getting bother by it” and “a humble request.” Aim for accurate, natural phrases suited to a polite complaint, such as “the noise is disturbing me” and “I would appreciate it if you could lower the volume.” Checking spelling and choosing standard collocations would make your message more fluent and easier to read.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, using clauses with “because” and “if,” as in “because of my job I only manage to find time for studies at night.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “I am student” is missing an article, “I could not focus” shifts tense without a clear reason, and “All I want from is a humble request” is missing a grammatical subject and has an incomplete construction. The sentence beginning “I would never have complained…” also contains a confusing conditional structure and repeated negation. Practise building shorter, accurate sentences first, then combine them carefully; check articles, verb tense, and sentence boundaries.
