IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear mr. Rahul,
I am writing to request decrease volume of music at night because It has been affecting my study and sleep from last week.
Playing a music in the night can negatively affect my mood and concentartion. I am not able to study late night due to large volume. As a result, I cannot perform well in the classes as I am not able to concentrate on study.
As my examinations are scheduled next week, It may affect my performance in the examinations. I also feel tired during the day and Cannot feel fresh and energetic because I cannot get enough sleep throughout the night.
Could you please play music in low volume in the midnight. I would also grateful if you could stop playing music in the night, especially, midnight until my examinations over.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your consideration and understanding.
Yours sincerely,
Khushbu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: the late-night music is the problem, you explain its effects on studying and sleep, and you ask your neighbour to lower or stop it during the examination period. The request is polite and your purpose is clear throughout. You also support the difficulty with relevant details, such as feeling tired during the day and being unable to concentrate in class. To make the ideas more fully developed, specify the hours when the music is disturbing you and make the requested arrangement more precise—for example, asking for quiet after a particular time until your exams finish. This would make the proposed solution clearer and more persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the problem, describe its effects, explain the added concern about upcoming examinations, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “As a result” and “Could you please” guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of a coherent arrangement and shows some effective linking. However, the progression within the explanation is occasionally repetitive: the effects on concentration and study are stated in closely related ways. The final request also combines lowering the volume with stopping music, without clearly distinguishing when each is expected. Streamlining repeated points and linking the request more precisely would make cohesion more flexible and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the situation and its consequences, with relevant expressions such as “affecting my study and sleep,” “concentrate,” and “feel tired during the day.” The tone is appropriately polite for a letter to a neighbour. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, including “request decrease volume,” “large volume,” and “play music in low volume.” There are also spelling and form errors such as “concentartion.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Practise common collocations for noise and requests, and proofread spelling and word forms before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mixture of simple sentences and some longer structures, including a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “As a result” and a conditional-style polite request with “Could you please.” The main message remains understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in sentence construction and grammatical forms. For example, “I am writing to request decrease volume” needs an article or a different structure, while “I would also grateful” is missing “be.” Capitalisation is inconsistent in “because It” and “Cannot,” and “until my examinations over” lacks a verb. These patterns show that complex or longer constructions are not yet controlled consistently. Focus on complete clause structure, articles, and auxiliary verbs, then check capitalisation and punctuation.
