IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complain about the noise level in my neighbourhood that I am experiencing late at night.

I have relocated to a new apartment around a month ago. First two weeks, I did not experienced any problem. However, from last two weeks, there is a considerable amount of noise created by my neighbours as they play a loud music till midnight.

Since I am a student, and I need to attempt final exams soon. Due to that, I need to prepare myself for examination, but I am unable to concentrate properly on study. Along with this, I cannot get enough sleep due to the excessive noise. So, I feel sleepy and tired for the next day, which negatively impact my performance.

I would apprecite it if the building department could restricted the noise level by imposing strict rules, especially during night time. It would also be greatful to place the notice on the main door about the restriction time and also the fine charges against who break the rules. This information can raise awareness among all the residents about the actions that they may ave to face if they do not follow the rules.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope appropriate actions will be taken to resolve this issue.

Yours faithfully,

Soni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: the late-night music is identified, its effects on studying and sleep are explained, and you request building rules and a notice about restrictions and fines. The consequences are relevant and clear, especially the link between poor sleep and reduced performance. However, the request is directed mainly to the “building department,” rather than directly to the new neighbours, and the letter does not clearly ask them to lower the volume or stop playing music after a particular time. Some ideas, such as how the noise affects exam preparation, could also be developed with a little more specific detail. Making the requested action more direct and fully tailored to the neighbours would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it introduces the complaint, explains the situation and its effects, then makes a request and closes politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and links such as “However,” “Along with this,” and “So” make relationships between ideas clear. This meets the lower-band expectations well and shows some features of stronger cohesion. At times, though, the connections feel mechanical, particularly the sequence “Since I am a student… Due to that…” and “Along with this… So.” The final paragraph also combines several requests and explanations in one long stretch. Use a more varied range of linking structures and separate the proposed actions from their expected benefits to make the flow smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal complaint, including “considerable amount of noise,” “excessive noise,” “restriction,” and “awareness.” These choices communicate the issue and its consequences clearly, and the tone is generally appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “attempt final exams,” “prepare myself for examination,” and “fine charges” do not express the intended meanings idiomatically. There are also spelling errors in “apprecite,” “greatful,” and “ave,” which are noticeable but do not prevent understanding. Aim for more precise, natural phrases and proofread spelling carefully; for example, “sit my final exams,” “prepare for my exams,” and “fines” would fit this context better.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “Since I am a student…” and the sentence explaining how tiredness affects performance. Most meaning remains clear, and the letter uses a range of sentence purposes, including a polite request. Some grammatical errors persist: “First two weeks” needs an article or possessive, “I did not experienced” has an incorrect verb form, and “could restricted” should use the base form after the modal. There are also issues with sentence structure in “Since I am a student, and I need to attempt final exams soon,” which is an incomplete construction. Review past-tense forms, modal verbs, and complete sentence structure, while retaining your attempts at longer sentences.
