IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writting this letter to showcase my dissatisfaction regarding the loud music that you play late every night.

I have a busy and fixed schedule, I mostly spend my time studying at every night as my examinations are coming soon. Almost every night, I hear loud music from your flat which is exaclty beside mine and it causes trouble for me as it would hard for me to focus completely.

The loud bass from the music shake the appartment's windows completely for hours and the music itself distact my attention from studies. I have tried puting earplugs and noise cancellation headphones .However, it is not helping at all.

I would greatly appreciate if you could lower down the volume or make it half so that it would not enter my flat after 10 p.m. Please take my humble request in consideration as my exams are approching.

King regards,

Dhruv

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points: it identifies late-night music as the problem, explains that it disrupts studying and sleep, and asks the neighbours to reduce the volume after 10 p.m. The request is clear and polite, and details such as the bass shaking the windows and the unsuccessful use of earplugs help support the complaint. The purpose and tone remain consistent. To make the response more fully developed, explain the effect on sleep more explicitly, since it is mentioned in the task but the letter focuses mainly on studying. You could also make the requested action more precise—for example, asking them to stop playing loud music after a particular time—while retaining the courteous tone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible sequence: the opening states the reason for writing, the next paragraphs describe the disruption and attempted solutions, and the final paragraph makes a request. This gives the letter a coherent overall arrangement. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “I have a busy and fixed schedule” joins two complete thoughts with only a comma, and “However” is attached to the preceding sentence without appropriate spacing or punctuation. The paragraphing is functional, but the explanation of the problem and its effects could be grouped and connected more clearly. Using a few natural links, such as “As a result” before describing the impact, would strengthen progression without making the letter sound mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the complaint, and phrases such as “loud bass,” “noise cancellation headphones,” and “lower down the volume” show an attempt to describe the situation specifically. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision and naturalness: “writting,” “exaclty,” “distact,” and “approching” are misspelled, while “showcase my dissatisfaction” sounds unnatural in this context. Some expressions are also imprecise, including “make it half” and “enter my flat.” These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they limit the range and control of the vocabulary. Aim for accurate, conventional complaint-letter phrasing and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “as my examinations are coming soon” and the conditional request “so that it would not enter my flat.” The main message remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For example, “I have a busy and fixed schedule, I mostly spend…” joins two independent clauses with a comma; “it would hard for me” is missing “be”; and “I have tried puting” needs a gerund construction (“tried putting”). There are also agreement and article problems in “the music itself distact my attention” and “the loud bass … shake.” More accurate sentence boundaries and verb forms would improve control while preserving the range of structures attempted.
