IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about the disturbing music noises that come from my neighbour's home especially at late nights.

My name is Harpreet Kaur, and I live at Levida street, Brampton, Ontarion, in the house number 207. A new neighbour recentely moved into my adjoining house, number 208, and we share the walls of our houses. This neighbour has a bad habit of playing music at a loud volume until midnight.

Since, he moved into my neighbourhood, it has become quite arduous not only for me, but for others also to concentrate on studies. I exams are scheduled from upcoming week, and I have to study until late. Due to the constant deafening music voice, I am unable to focus on my education as well as I cannot sleep properly. Because of this sleep deprivation, I have to face some health issues, such as stress and headache.

It would be really appreciated if you could take some actions to alleviate this issue immediately. You can suggest him to use headphones while listening to music or to keep the volume low. If he still keeps listening to music at same phase, you could also give them some kind of warning.

I hope you will consider this matter urgently, and impliment the required mesaures.

Yours faithfully,

Harpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: the late-night music is identified, its effects on study and sleep are explained, and you request practical action, including headphones, lower volume, and a warning if needed. The details about your upcoming examinations and the resulting stress and headaches make the complaint relevant and persuasive. The purpose and requested outcome remain clear throughout. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more precisely what action you expect the recipient to take—for example, whether they should contact the neighbour directly and ask for quiet hours. The reference to difficulties for “others also” is not supported with details, so keeping the focus on your own experience would make the case more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear, useful sequence: it opens with the complaint, gives the neighbour and location details, explains the impact, and ends with requested action and a polite closing. Paragraphing supports this progression, and links such as “Since” and “Because of this” help show cause and effect. The overall organisation is easy to follow. Some connections are less smooth, however: “Since, he moved” has an unnecessary pause, and the shift from your personal difficulties to “others also” is abrupt. The final paragraph also combines several requests without clearly prioritising them. Smoother linking and more precise references to who should act would make cohesion more flexible and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for a formal complaint, including relevant expressions such as “adjoining house,” “concentrate on studies,” “sleep deprivation,” and “alleviate this issue.” These choices communicate the problem and its effects, and some less common vocabulary shows an effort to be precise. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “music noises,” “music voice,” and “at same phase” do not express the intended meaning naturally. There are also spelling errors in “recentely,” “Ontarion,” “impliment,” and “mesaures.” Aim for familiar, accurate collocations rather than more elaborate wording, and proofread spelling carefully; this would make the vocabulary more precise and consistent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional request (“It would be really appreciated if…”) and a cause-and-effect sentence about sleep deprivation. Most of the message remains understandable, and the paragraph structure helps the reader follow it. Some grammatical errors remain, though. “Since, he moved” has incorrect punctuation, “I exams are scheduled” is an incorrect sentence structure, and “I am unable to focus … as well as I cannot sleep” does not coordinate the ideas correctly. There are also issues with articles and prepositions in phrases such as “at same phase.” Review sentence construction and check each clause for a clear subject and verb. Greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the letter.
