IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir/madam

I am writing this letter because im concerned about the music you have been playing every late night

firstly,i would like to welcome you in our neighbourhood.actually, i am a college student and i have final exams starting on next monday. Therefore, i have a humble request for you if you could lower the volume of music you play at the night because it distrub my sleep cycle. This directly impact my studies. Moreover, i used to read late at the night but the music volume is distracting my focus

I would therefore apperciate it if you accept my request and lower the volume until i have exams.

Thank you for your time and assistance, i look forward to hearing from you soon

Best regards

Pooja

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you identify late-night music, explain that it disrupts sleep and concentration while you prepare for final exams, and request that the neighbours lower the volume. The purpose and polite tone are clear, and the request to reduce the noise until the exams finish is relevant. However, some ideas are only briefly developed: for example, you could explain how often the music continues or specify a reasonable time for it to stop. The response is also 23 words below the required minimum, so there is limited space to develop the situation and request fully. Add a little more detail while keeping the letter focused and courteous.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a generally sensible order: it introduces the concern, gives the effect on your studies and sleep, and ends with a request and polite closing. Linking expressions such as “Firstly,” “Moreover,” and “I would therefore” help show the relationship between points. However, the ideas are presented in one long body paragraph, so the explanation and request are not visually separated. Some transitions also feel mechanical, and punctuation around connectors is inconsistent. Use separate paragraphs for the problem and its effects, then the requested action, and connect ideas with a more natural range of transitions. This would make the progression easier to follow without changing the clear overall purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for communicating the situation, with relevant phrases such as “final exams,” “sleep cycle,” and “distracting my focus.” The polite expressions “humble request” and “appreciate it” also suit a neighbourly letter. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “distrub,” “apperciate,” and “lower the volume of music you play at the night.” Some expressions are understandable but not fully natural, particularly “impact my studies” and “distracting my focus.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, such as “affect my studies,” “disturb my sleep,” and “make it difficult to concentrate.” This will make the message sound clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and more complex forms, including the conditional request “if you could lower the volume” and the reason introduced by “because.” The meaning remains clear overall. Some grammatical errors are present, however: “This directly impact my studies” needs subject–verb agreement (“impacts”), and “exams starting on next Monday” has an unnecessary preposition. The sentence beginning “Therefore” also needs clearer punctuation and structure, while “I would appreciate it if you accept my request” would be more accurate as “if you would accept” or “if you could do so.” Check sentence boundaries, agreement, and verb forms, while continuing to use varied sentence patterns.
