IELTS Writing Task 1 question
New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.
- explain what the problem is
- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Rajveer,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to share my concern that is occuring due to high volume of music from your house, which is affecting my study and sleep.
The problem that I'm facing these days is the loud noise from your house. I know you're a music lover but the high-volume of music is distracting for me and also effecting my quality of sleep.
Since I am not only doing part-time study at university but also doing afternoon shifts to manage my finance, I hardly get time to rest. Usually I prefer to study at night due to my hectic schedule and my final examination will start from next week. But from 8 P.M. to 3 A.M ,the non-stop music from your residence is distracting my study and also not allowing me to get a good sleep.
I would be grateful if you can reduce your music volume after 8 P.M. ,so I can focus on my study and can get sleep without any disturbance.
Thank you for understanding my situation.
Yours sincerely,
Manveer Kaila.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three requirements: you identify the late, loud music, explain its effect on your study and sleep, and request that Rajveer lower the volume after 8 p.m. The details about your afternoon shifts, limited time to rest, and examinations starting next week make the difficulty personal and persuasive. Your request is also polite and clear. To make the response more fully developed, specify whether you are asking for the music to stop or simply become quieter, and perhaps suggest a reasonable quiet time. The explanation is relevant throughout, though the requested action could be more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: a polite opening and statement of concern, an explanation of the problem and its impact, a request, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and links such as “Since” and “But” show how your schedule relates to the noise. Some ideas are repeated, particularly the loud music distracting you, in both the second and third paragraphs. The long sentence beginning “Since I am not only…” also carries several details at once. You could improve flow by combining repeated points and separating the schedule, examination, and noise details into more balanced sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for a neighbourly complaint, and phrases such as “hectic schedule,” “quality of sleep,” and “I would be grateful” communicate the situation and maintain a polite tone. There are, however, some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “share my concern that is occurring due to” is awkward, and “manage my finance” does not express your meaning naturally. “High-volume of music” and “get a good sleep” are also less idiomatic than alternatives such as “loud music” and “sleep well.” Aim for accurate collocations and avoid repeating “distracting” by using a more precise expression for the effect on your concentration.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the clause beginning “Since I am not only…” and the conditional purpose in “so I can focus.” Meaning remains clear, and several sentences are controlled. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “the high-volume of music is distracting for me and also effecting,” the verb form should be “affecting”; in “my final examination will start,” the plural may be more appropriate if you mean several exams. The sentence beginning “Since” is also lengthy and would be easier to control if divided. Review punctuation around the time expression and commas, and check sentence structure when joining several ideas.
