- why it is causing you difficulties
- what action you would like them to take
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Neighbour,
I hope you doung well. I am writing to bring to your attention an issue regarding the loud music coming from your house late night.
Since you recently moved into the house next door, I have noticed that music is often played at high volume, perticularly during the late evening an at night. I completely understand that you may enjoy listening to music, but the noise has become qiute disturbing.
The main problem is that I have som important examination coming up soon, and I need to spend several hours studying every day. Unfortunately, the loud music makes it difficult fr me concentrate on my studies.
I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume of your music after 10 p.m. Alternatively, you could use headphones when listening to music late night. I believe this small change would make significant difference and allow both of us to enjoy our homes comfortably.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. I hope we can resolve this issue and maintain a good relationship as a neighbours.
Yours Sincerely,
Satish

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: it identifies late-night loud music, explains that upcoming examinations require daily study and that the noise disrupts concentration, and requests a practical change. The polite, consistent tone suits a letter to new neighbours, and the specific suggestion to lower the volume after 10 p.m. makes the request actionable. The explanation of the effect on sleep, however, is not developed, despite sleep being part of the situation, and the impact on studying is stated rather than illustrated. To strengthen the response further, briefly explain how the noise affects rest as well as concentration, while retaining the courteous tone and clear request.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The message follows a clear progression from greeting and statement of the problem to its effect, proposed solutions, and a courteous closing. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Since,” “Unfortunately,” and “Alternatively” help the reader follow the reasoning. The contrast in “I completely understand … but” also softens the complaint effectively. Cohesion is generally flexible, though some transitions are quite formulaic, and the final sentence shifts from “both of us” to “as a neighbours,” which slightly weakens the closing’s smoothness. For a more polished flow, connect the effect on sleep to the study problem and make the closing phrasing consistent with the singular addressee.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes useful expressions such as “bring to your attention,” “high volume,” “disturbing,” and “maintain a good relationship.” These choices communicate the complaint politely and make the requested action clear. However, the range is not consistently precise: “late night” is repeated, and “small change” and “significant difference” are fairly general. There are also spelling errors, including “doung,” “perticularly,” “qiute,” and “som,” which detract from the otherwise understandable message. Aim for more precise phrasing and carefully proofread spelling; varied expressions for the noise and its effects would make the letter more fluent and controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including the conditional request “I would really appreciate it if you could lower the volume” and the clause beginning “Since you recently moved.” Most sentences are easy to understand, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, such as “I need to spend several hours studying” followed by “makes it difficult for me concentrate,” where “to” is needed before “concentrate.” The closing “as a neighbours” also has an article-and-number mismatch, and “make significant difference” needs an article. Review infinitive patterns and singular/plural agreement, while continuing to use varied sentence forms.
