IELTS Writing Task 1 question

New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Chris,

I would like to bring to your attention an issue regarding loud music after 10 pm, continuously sounds are coming from your flat until morning, which is negatively affecting my studies and sleeping schedules. I regularly study from 9 pm to 11 pm and, after that, I go to bed. But, these days I am unable to follow my routine.

I am extremely disappointed by such careless behaviour from your family. Late night playing music is even spoiling my next morning, as I am unable to wake up early in the morning and losing my concentration in learning, which is going to affect my exam performance.

In light of this issue, I would suggest that reduce the volumeof music. I hope you will take immediate steps to rectify the situation.

I trust this matter will be solved promptly. I would appreciate your immediate attention to this issue.

Yours sincerely,

Ramandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three points: it identifies music continuing late at night, explains the effects on your study routine, sleep, concentration and exam performance, and asks the neighbours to reduce the volume. The specific routine of studying from 9 to 11 and then going to bed makes the problem clear. The request is also appropriately direct. However, the explanation of the impact is more developed than the action you want: “reduce the volume” could be made more precise by asking them to turn it down after a particular time or use headphones. The criticism of their “careless behaviour” may also make the request less tactful. The task is covered, but some ideas need fuller, more considerate development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the noise, describe its effects, and then make a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish the problem from its consequences and proposed solution, while phrases such as “In light of this issue” and “I trust this matter will be solved promptly” signal the letter’s progression and closing. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening sentence joins several ideas in a crowded structure, and “But, these days” is an awkward transition from your usual routine to the current difficulty. The final two sentences repeat the request for prompt attention. More concise linking and a clearer separation of the problem, impact and specific request would make the progression more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a neighbourly complaint, including “negatively affecting,” “concentration,” “exam performance” and “rectify the situation.” These choices communicate the issue clearly, and the tone is mostly formal. Some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, though: “sleeping schedules” is less suitable than “sleep schedule,” “Late night playing music” is awkward, and “spoiling my next morning” does not express the effect idiomatically. “Careless behaviour” is also rather accusatory for a request to new neighbours. Aim for natural collocations and a consistently courteous register; this would make the message more precise while retaining its formal vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as the sentence explaining that late-night music affects your morning and concentration. The main meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors reduce control. In the opening, “continuously sounds are coming” has an incorrect word order and is attached awkwardly to the preceding clause. “I would suggest that reduce the volume” is missing a subject and a correctly formed verb after “that”; for example, “I would suggest that you reduce the volume.” The sentence beginning “Late night playing music is even spoiling…” also has an unclear grammatical structure, and “I am unable to wake up early … and losing” is not parallel. Check clause structure and keep coordinated verb forms consistent.
