New neighbours have recently moved into the house/flat next door to where you live. You have examinations soon, but your neighbours play music late at night which is affecting your studies and sleep.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope your well. I am kiran and living near by you and your late night music disturb me and I cannot concentrate on my study.

The fact is that you moved into the house next door, I have noticed that you often play loud music late at night. Unfortunately, the noise can be heard inside my house, even when my windows and doors are closed.

The main problem is that my examinations are coming soon and I need a quiet environment where I can sit and read the material. But, loud noise affecting my concentrtaion ability. Moreover, I cannot sleep properly at night, which makes me feel tired and stressed during the day.

I would really appreciate it if you could low the volume of the music and if possible, please use headphone when listening music late at night. I hope we can resolve this issue in friendly manner.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Yours sincerely,

Kirandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three points clearly: you explain that loud music is played late at night, describe how it disrupts studying and sleep, and request that the neighbours lower the volume or use headphones. The effects are supported with relevant details, such as needing a quiet place to study and feeling “tired and stressed during the day.” The polite, direct request gives the letter a clear purpose and maintains an appropriate tone for a neighbour. To develop the response further, make the requested change more specific—for example, ask them to keep the volume low after a particular time—and briefly explain how this would help you prepare for your examinations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the noise, explains its effects, and then makes a request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “Moreover,” and “I would really appreciate it” guide the reader through the message. The opening and closing also make the format recognisable as a personal letter. Some connections could be smoother: “The fact is that” is an awkward lead-in to the explanation, and “But” at the start of the next sentence creates a slightly abrupt transition. Use more natural links, such as “As a result,” and ensure each paragraph develops one main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the situation, including “loud music,” “quiet environment,” “concentrate,” and “resolve this issue.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems make the language less natural. Examples include “near by you,” “low the volume,” “use headphone,” and the misspelling “concentrtaion.” “Co-operation” is understandable, but “cooperation” is the more usual spelling. Aim to learn common phrases as complete units, such as “lower the volume” and “listen to music,” and check spelling carefully. More precise expressions for the noise and its impact would also help you express the complaint more fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “Unfortunately” and the clause “which makes me feel tired and stressed during the day.” These structures help explain the consequences of the noise. However, errors in basic sentence construction and grammatical forms are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “I hope your well” needs the contraction “you’re,” while “I am kiran and living” lacks a parallel verb form. In “loud noise affecting my…” a finite verb is needed, and “when listening music” requires a grammatical construction such as “when listening to music.” Practise complete clauses, verb forms, articles, and prepositions, then proofread each sentence.
