Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sameer,
I am writing this letter to let you know about the about loud music sound coming from your house at night which is causing me problems.
I have been getting loud music sound every night since you have moved in next door which is affecting my sleep. I have tried to properly close my door and windows but it is so loud that I cannot stop hearig. Furthermore, it is constantly coming throughout the whole night
I have been preparing for my upcoming examinatons but, due to this disturbance, I am an not able to sleep properly which is impacting my ability to focus on my studies. It has adversely affected my routine as I remain fatigued throughout the day due to improper sleep at night.
Would you please stop playing loud music at night? I would really appreciate if you could play at a low volume or find a different time and place to play the music.
Warm regards,
Ajaypal Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter clearly addresses all three points: it identifies the late-night music, explains its effects on sleep and exam preparation, and asks the neighbours to reduce the volume or choose another time and place. The request is polite and appropriate for a letter to a new neighbour. The explanation is supported with relevant details, such as being unable to sleep properly and feeling fatigued during the day. To make the response more fully developed, specify a practical arrangement—for example, asking them to keep the music low after a particular hour—and clarify whether the noise continues all night or occurs late at night. Overall, the purpose and desired action are clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, logical sequence: it introduces the complaint, describes the effect on sleep, explains the impact on exam preparation, and ends with a request. Paragraphing supports this progression, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore” and “due to this disturbance” help connect the ideas. The closing is also suitable for the relationship. Some connections could be smoother: the second paragraph ends without punctuation, and the shift from the noise affecting sleep to its effect on studies could be linked more explicitly. Avoid repeating the same point about loud music and sleep; a more concise progression would make the cohesion feel less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for explaining the complaint and its consequences, with useful choices such as “upcoming examinations,” “disturbance,” “focus,” and “fatigued.” These convey the situation clearly, and the reader can understand the request without difficulty. However, some phrases are awkward or repetitive, particularly “loud music sound” and “getting loud music sound,” which show limited control of natural collocation. There are also spelling errors in “hearig” and “examinatons,” and the phrase “I am an not able” contains an unnecessary word. Aim for more natural expressions such as “the music coming from your home” and “I can still hear it,” and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “which is impacting my ability to focus” and the contrast introduced by “but.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the letter’s request is grammatically understandable. Some errors remain, however: “I cannot stop hearig” needs a gerund construction (“I cannot stop hearing it”), “I am an not able” has an incorrect article and word order, and “I would really appreciate if” is better formed as “I would really appreciate it if.” The final sentence also needs a full stop after the preceding paragraph. More consistent control of these patterns and punctuation would strengthen accuracy.
